Stories of change - your impact in 2025

By Amy Swainston | Philanthropy Manager

Esther and her children

We would like to thank each and every one of our supporters through GlobalGiving for your commitment and investment in transforming children’s lives in northern Ghana with AfriKids this year.

In 2025, your support helped children, families and communities overcome barriers to education, strengthen livelihoods, and build brighter futures. Across the region, many families continue to face poverty, rising costs and the effects of climate change, which can force children out of school and into work.

Yet, thanks to your partnership, communities are coming together to ensure children are safe, in school and learning. Four years into our five-year programme, we are seeing meaningful progress, with strong improvements in learning outcomes and community-led change.

The difference you’ve made

This year, you supported 115,604 people across 60 communities in northern Ghana.

Including:

  • 44,928 children receiving life-changing support to stay in school

And it’s driving real change:

  • Literacy has increased by 115%, meaning 5,000 more children can now read
  • Numeracy has increased by 173%, meaning 7,600 more children now have essential maths skills
  • There has been a reduction in violence, exploitation and harmful practices against children
  • More children are able to explain what to do if they or another child are being abused, and more teachers are using inclusive, quality teaching practices

The context

In northern Ghana, 7 in 10 families live in multidimensional poverty, creating pressures that often force children out of school.

Even when education is free, the cost of uniforms, books, meals and transport can be a barrier. As a result, many children remain out of school, and girls are particularly vulnerable due to harmful gender norms and early and forced marriage.

Climate change is also affecting farming livelihoods, making it harder for families to afford the costs of education.

Your impact

Our work this year focused on tackling these barriers at their root by providing means, building motive and creating opportunity - always working hand-in-hand with communities.

PROVIDE MEANS

You helped families strengthen their livelihoods so they can support their children:

  • More than 1,700 women continued to grow small businesses through microfinance support
  • Women trained in climate-smart agriculture saw average incomes increase by 80%, with improved savings through community groups
  • 3,783 children are now more likely to be happy, healthy and in school as a result of stronger caregiver livelihoods

BUILD MOTIVE

You helped communities recognise the value of education and take action:

  • 180 schools worked with parents and communities to strengthen accountability for children’s learning
  • Our Back-to-School campaign supported 4,458 children enrolling on day one, with 40% new or returning learners
  • Communities are increasingly standing together to challenge harmful practices and protect girls’ right to learn

CREATE OPPORTUNITY

You helped improve the quality of education and opportunities available to children:

  • 19,375 children experienced stronger, more inclusive education through improved teaching and school leadership
  • 60 schools were equipped with play-based learning materials and classroom resources
  • Girls are building confidence and expanding their aspirations through STEM and rights-based programmes

Esther’s story

Esther lives in Mamprugu-Moagduri, one of the most remote districts where AfriKids works. Like many mothers, she worked tirelessly to provide for her children, selling goods at the local market while struggling to cover the costs of their education.

Through AfriKids’ livelihoods programme, Esther received business training and a small loan. With this support, she was able to grow her business and increase her income.

Today, she can feed her children, send them to school, and provide the resources they need to learn and thrive. Her daughters now attend school regularly, and Esther dreams of them becoming doctors and giving back to their community.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, we are building on this progress through Rise Up - a new initiative designed to unlock a breakthrough in children’s learning by placing communities at the heart of change.

This work will focus on increasing learning both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Thank you

Because of you, children in northern Ghana are not only staying in school - they are learning, thriving, and exceeding expectations.

Your support is helping communities build sustainable systems that protect children and support their futures.

We’re incredibly grateful to have you alongside us on this journey.

M’pusiah - thank you.
