Harvesting Hope: Lomshiyo Community Farm

Over the past three months, the Lomshiyo Agricultural Farming Project has made steady progress across multiple fronts, from food production and land preparation to infrastructure improvements and training opportunities for young agriculturalists. Here's an overview of the key developments during this quarter:

• Crop Production & Preparation
  The final pepper crops from the summer season were removed, and preparations began for replanting in August, with a plan to plant one hectare every four weeks to ensure staggered, sustained production.
  Cabbages were planted and are on track to be ready for harvest in another six weeks.
  Spinach has been harvested consistently over the past two months, supplying both local supermarkets and community feeding schemes.

• Farm Maintenance & Infrastructure
  Maintenance work was carried out on protective nets, dripper irrigation lines, and access roads. All perimeter fence lines were cleared, and fire breaks were created through controlled burning to reduce wildfire risk.
  A new toilet and shower block was installed to improve living and working conditions for farm workers.
  A dedicated crate washing station was also constructed to support food safety and hygiene during harvesting and distribution.

• Macadamia Orchard Development
  Although the recent macadamia harvest in May yielded fewer nuts than expected, a new fertilisation and management program was introduced to improve future yield. Trees were pruned to make future harvesting easier and more efficient.

• Soil Enrichment & New Planting Plans
  Soil preparation is well underway, with disking and ridging taking place across key blocks. Fertiliser derived from rhino dung is being spread to enrich the soil naturally.
  Plans are in place to plant butternut squash towards the end of the year, along with half a hectare each of pumpkins and watermelons, ensuring crop diversity and seasonal adaptability.

• Youth Development & Training
  A new group of 15 Investec interns has joined the project and will undergo a year-long training program in agricultural management. This forms part of our continued commitment to skills development and employment in rural communities.

The First Macadamia Harvest

The project took a significant step forward with its first macadamia harvest in 2024. After years of dedication and overcoming challenges like extreme weather conditions, the initial planting of macadamia trees in March 2020 has borne fruit—literally. Over two days, an impressive 1.5 tonnes of macadamia nuts were harvested, marking a milestone for the Lomshiyo Farming Project.

From Farm to Table: The Processing Journey

Once harvested, the macadamia nuts are sent to a factory for meticulous processing to ensure they meet the highest standards of quality. The journey includes:

1. Husking: Removing the outer husks.
2. Drying: Reducing moisture content in ovens to achieve the optimal oil percentage.
3. Shell Removal: Separating the outer shells from the kernels.
4. Sorting and Grading: Categorizing kernels by size, color, and quality.
5. Packaging: Preparing the final product for shipment and distribution.

This thorough process highlights the care and attention to detail required to bring high-quality macadamias to market.
