Project Report | May 8, 2025
Proyecto ubik activities

By Sagrario Santorum | Head of development

At he beginnign of this year, we were shaken by news that affected us deeply: our yekwana artesan coordinator, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer.

From the moment we knew her diagnosis, we focused in finding the best treatment for her. After sending a biopsy to a specialized laboratory in Belgium, she was started on chemotherapy specifically designed for her.

Thanks to chemotherapy and a good diet wiht indigenous products such as açai, wild honey, sehe oil and pijiguao flour, her blood levels are practically normal and she has managed to enter that 5% of the population that survives more than 3 months with stage IV lung cancer.

So, we are happy and full of hope that she can beat cancer.

On another hand, one of the our main purposes as organization is to promote knowledge of the culture of the indigenous communities in Venezuela and, based on that, we organized a talk on the importance of hte indigenous culture in venezuelan gastronomy with internationally award winning chef Helena Ibarra.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of our supporters, who have helped us to give Dawa the opportunity to beat cancer and have helped society gain a greater understanding of the tremendous contribution that indigenous peoples make to humanity.
