At the Heliopolis Elderly Center, we are back to our normal in-person classes. We are also happy to announce that our Yoga classes offer a regular exercise routine for our older persons that can improve their quality of life and help them maintain their independence. As we know many older adults struggle to find a safe, low-impact exercise that fits within their fitness levels. Luckily, yoga for seniors offers a viable solution.
Yoga is an exercise you can do all your life. Its low-impact nature makes it suitable for those with joint pain, osteoporosis, or limited mobility. Plus, yoga poses can easily be modified to fit each Senior's comfort level and physical ability, making it a wonderful exercise for our entire community.
Below, we share some beautiful photos of yoga's health benefits, some gentle poses suitable for seniors, and they began a regular yoga routine. Studies show yoga benefits your physical, mental, and emotional health. These widespread benefits are particularly valuable as you age.
According to doctors, yoga can benefit their minds as much as their bodies. Studies show that practicing yoga causes decreased depression, stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels and increases feelings of hope over time.
At the Heliopolis Elderly Center taking care of mental health is important. We know that the risks associated with mental health struggles increase as you grow older. Those who suffer from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke, have an increased risk of suffering from depression. In addition, depression can complicate the treatment of these conditions, making treatment more difficult. Our yoga classes are specially designed to aid our seniors with mental health issues.
Yoga is a safe and effective way for our older adults to increase strength, balance, and flexibility. In addition, we have found that many of our seniors have lost weight, as well as prevented chronic health issues, and can now sleep more soundly.
Our dear student Teresa who is 68 says about the weekly yoga classes, "I love practicing yoga with my friends at the Heliopolis Elderly Center; I really missed being around people during covid, and practicing alone at home was difficult for me; we live in a very small house. Now I can really enjoy all the benefits of yoga and it has been a game changer for me!"
We thank all our donors for making these classes available to our senior citizens at the Heliopolis Elderly Center.
