Public Primary School Golf Programme

Teacher Training, Student Development & Competition

Building a Pathway to Reach 10,000 Children

Overview

As we prepare for the upcoming school golf season, our priority is to expand access to golf in public primary schools and create a sustainable pathway for children to Learn → Practice → Compete → Progress.

Our long-term goal is to help 10,000 children actively practice golf at school. To achieve this, PE teachers will receive practical training that enables them to introduce golf and incorporate it into regular physical education.

During the upcoming semester, students will then have the opportunity to compete in a structured Drive, Chip & Putt competition, with participating schools transporting students to the competition venue.

1. PE Teacher Training

The professional development programme will equip PE teachers with the knowledge and confidence to introduce golf and provide regular practice opportunities.

Training will focus on four areas:

Drive: Grip, setup, posture, alignment, balance and basic ball striking, supported by simple drills that develop coordination, distance and confidence.

Chip: Fundamentals of short-game technique, touch, control, distance awareness and accuracy.

Putt: Alignment, distance control, accuracy and consistency using drills that can be practiced in school environments.

Match Play: Age-appropriate formats introducing students to competition, decision-making, pressure management, resilience and sportsmanship.

2. Bringing Golf Into Schools

Following training, teachers will provide regular opportunities for students to practice:

Driving, chipping and putting

Golf movement and coordination

Basic rules and etiquette

Competition and sportsmanship

Match-play concepts

This moves golf from an occasional exposure activity to a consistent part of the PE experience. By bringing the fundamentals of golf directly to schools, we can reach significantly more children without requiring every student to visit a golf course.

3. From Practice to Competition

During the upcoming semester, students will put their skills into action through a Drive, Chip & Putt competition.

Students will compete in:

Drive: Distance, accuracy, balance and ball striking

Chip: Touch, control, accuracy and proximity

Putt: Alignment, distance control, accuracy and consistency

The competition will provide an introduction to organized sport while developing preparation, focus, confidence, pressure management and sportsmanship.

4. Creating a Development Pathway

The programme creates a clear progression:

School Introduction → Teacher Instruction → Regular Practice → Competition → Match Play → Junior Golf Development

Students demonstrating interest or ability can be directed toward junior golf programmes, academies, clinics, tournaments and national development pathways.

5. Talent Identification

The competition will provide an opportunity for PE teachers and golf professionals to identify students with particular interest, ability or potential. These students can receive additional development opportunities and become part of the broader junior golf pipeline.

6. Expected Outcomes

Students: Greater exposure to golf, fundamental skills, regular practice, competition experience, confidence, sportsmanship and opportunities to progress into junior golf.

Teachers: Increased confidence teaching golf, practical Drive, Chip & Putt skills, the ability to organize school golf activities and introduce match play.

Programme: Greater access to golf, increased participation, a measurable school-to-competition pathway, identification of future junior golfers and a stronger national development pipeline.

7. Measuring Success

Impact will be measured through:

PE teachers trained

Participating schools

Students introduced to golf

Students regularly practicing

Drive, Chip & Putt participants

Students transported to competitions

Match-play participation

Students identified for further development

Students transitioning into junior golf

These measures will demonstrate not only how many children were introduced to golf, but how many practiced, competed and progressed.

8. The Bigger Vision

The goal is not simply to have 10,000 children experience golf. It is to have 10,000 children actively practicing golf at school, with a clear opportunity to compete and progress.

By training PE teachers, providing school-based practice, transporting students to competitions and connecting talented students to junior programmes, we can build a sustainable model that expands across The Bahamas.

This initiative is about more than teaching children to swing a golf club. It is about access, opportunity, development and creating the next generation of Bahamian golfers.

Learn. Practice. Compete. Progress.
