Dear Supporter,
Like in many countries around the world, the Seychelles suffers from significant numbers of stray cats and dogs that roam the streets with little food to eat and no permanent place to sleep comfortably. They are viewed as pests rather than pets. For many years nothing had been done about this serious problem, and so was created the Seychelles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).
The goal of the SSPCA is to prevent cruelty to animals in Seychelles and promote good welfare and responsible animal ownership. The SSPCA is aiming to raise funds for medical treatment, as well as to provide a centre where stray and neglected domestic animals can be treated, cared for and ultimately re-homed. The photo in this report shows a puppy that has been re-homed by the SSPCA.
For the past 2 years, GVI have been working closely with SSPCA in order to help raise funds for their important and worthwhile efforts. Every 3 months here on Curieuse Island, we organise and take part in fundraising activities to raise as much funds as much as possible for SSPCA.
Earlier this year, the volunteers and staff on GVI Curieuse Island, took part in a wonderfully fun day of fundraising in aid of the great work of the SSPCA, by all participating in ‘Curieuse Island Monopoly’ - a real life version of the board game set on our beautiful tropical island. Volunteers and staff were split into 4 teams and had to compete in tasks, challenges and questions at various locations around the island. They could earn (and lose) cash, properties or move places up the rankings based on how well they completed the tasks, and winning the overall challenge depended on cash, properties owned, and a final Pub Quiz round. The group were able to raise over $1000 from this one event thanks to very generous donations form people all around the world. It was a hugely successful day and one that resulted in a brilliant amount of money fundraised for the SSPCA.
Our next challenge will be once again based on Curieuse Island, however it will be a spin on the classic UK 90s show ‘The Crystal Maze’ – and fingers crossed we will be able to raise more funds than previously. Our event will be taking place on 15th August and all donations recieved on GlobalGiving will join forces with those our volunteers fundaise to help contribute to the wonderful work of the SSPCA.
Thanks for your continuing support.
All the best
GVI Seychelles
