Four years ago, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine upended the lives of millions of people. Americares responded immediately and has not stopped. Through a network of local partners, Americares has delivered medicine, medical supplies, health services, and mental health support to communities across Ukraine and the region, ensuring that health care reaches those who need it most.

THE WAR TODAY

Russia’s war against Ukraine enters its fifth year with no end in sight. Daily strikes continue across central Kyiv and eastern frontline areas, causing widespread destruction to health facilities, energy infrastructure and civilian areas.

  • 1,000+ health facilities damaged since the invasion
  • 2,700+ verified attacks on health care (WHO)
  • Millions face daily power and heating disruptions in an especially cold winter
  • 3.8M people displaced within Ukraine
  • 10.8M people in need of humanitarian assistance

MEDICINE & HEALTH SERVICES

Americares has coordinated more than 200 shipments of medicine and medical supplies into Ukraine and neighboring countries, partnering with local organizations to ensure resources reach frontline health workers and vulnerable communities.

  • More than 6 million prescriptions’ worth of medicine delivered
  • 33 Medical Outreach volunteer trips to Poland, Romania, and Ukraine, providing $4.7M in donated medicines
  • 147 emergency grants valued at more than $7 million awarded to 62 partner organizations
  • More than $122 million in medicine and supplies shipped across the region

STRENGTHENING LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

Americares approach centers on building the longterm capacity of Ukrainian local partners, ensuring that organizations can sustain their work long after the immediate crisis recedes.

  • Strengthened six Ukrainian NGOs through targeted capacity building in strategic planning, financial stability, and leadership development.

MENTAL HEALTH & PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

Recognizing that war’s wounds are not only physical, Americares has prioritized mental health from the start, funding local partners, building capacity, and delivering direct psychosocial support to frontline workers and communities.

  • 64 mental health grants totaling more than $2.5 million awarded to 27 partner organizations
  • 983 educators trained through the Psychosocial Support for Educators (PSE) program, indirectly supporting an estimated 22,500 students
  • Psychosocial Support for Educators training approved by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education as official continuing education for teachers nationwide
  • A peer-reviewed study in Cambridge Prisms confirmed that Americares PSE training yields measurable improvements in teacher wellbeing and their ability to support students
  • Family Circle’s Resilience Academy reached 93,000+ Ukrainians through psychoeducation & anti-stigma campaigns
  • Americares hosted a Virtual Partner Summit in November 2025, convening 38 representatives from MHPSS and medicine security partner organizations to share best practices and strengthen collaboration across the Ukraine response.

LOOKING AHEAD

As the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, Americares remains committed to its local partners and the communities they serve. Active programs in 2026:

  • Mental health support for 900 medical professionals across 12 hospitals
  • New psychosocial support for educators training modules on burnout prevention and anxiety management for educators in frontline regions, expected to reach 280 educators and 12,500+ students indirectly
  • Psychoeducation and resilience training for 3,000 frontline workers

IMPACT STORY

Seven-year-old Roman's* journey from trauma to hope shows the power of mental health support in the wake of a crisis. After being rescued from Mariupol by his older brother, who is now Romans's only guardian, they struggled in a new city with finding support for his speech disorders and socialization challenges.

Through Americares supported mental health programming, provided by partner Divchata at the "I Can, Pechersk" center in Ukraine, he received the support he needed. Thanks to proper support through speech therapy, neurocorrection exercises and art therapy, his life has been transformed for the better. Today, Roman is confidently preparing for school and building friendships with his peers.
