Help Educate 40 Bright Girls in Lesotho

Earlier in the year, I told you Lerato’s story. She had just finished high school and had got the best grades in her year. She informed us all that she plans to study medicine and that her ultimate goal is to become a cardiologist. She says she knows that if it had not been for your kind support she most likely would not have got this far. Here’s how she puts it:

Your help is really appreciated. Without it, I probably would eventually have finished high school, but with my father unemployed and my mother in a low-paid factory job, it would have been very difficult indeed. My mother also supports my younger sister, who is in primary school, so I would have had to drop out of school on and off when she couldn’t manage the fees.

But here’s the good news. As Lerato got such good grades in her final exams, she secured government funding to study for a baccalaureate at the international school in the capital town. This means she is one step closer to starting her medical course. All this has been made possible by your generous donations.

The end of the current school year is fast approaching and another 13 young women sponsored by Educare Fund will be writing their final high school exams. With the future ahead of them, we hope they will follow in Lerato’s footsteps and get the best results they can so they can achieve their dreams. This again is all thanks to you.

As in previous years, Educare Fund is gearing up for participation in the end-of-year fundraising campaigns. Tuesday 28th November is this year’s #GivingTuesday and marks the start of the 2017 End of Year Fundraising Campaign. We are, of course, yet again asking for your support in these campaigns.

On behalf of Educare Fund, I want to extend our sincere gratitude for your continuing support. Your generous donations are having a major impact, helping us make a positive difference in the future lives of the young women in Lesotho.

Keep Up the Good Work

Keep up the good work.

Your generosity continues to change young lives. Many of you have supported Educare Fund since the late 90s. In the past 20 years that Educare Fund has been operating, your continued support has made a huge difference to many families in Lesotho through enabling the girls from these families to follow their dreams and seek a bright future for themselves. This would not have been possible without your very kind contributions.

Feedback from our beneficiaries continues to shed more light on the huge difference your donations make to the girls and their families and it would appear that there is continuing need for support. Ithabeleng (now in the final year of high school) writes:

‘I am really happy to have been awarded the sponsorship. I was struggling to stay in school as my mother was not able to pay the school fees. Examination fees were especially challenging when taking into account that the tuition fees still had to be paid. I thank you very much for the help you have given me.’

Ithabeleng’s class teacher further clarifies:

‘I do not hesitate to tell you that with your help Ithabeleng is now able to come to school regularly, which was impossible before. Her single mother is unemployed and was unable to afford the fees. With the fear of unpaid fees having been lifted, Ithabeleng is now working really well in class.’

The common issues affecting girl child education in poorer families appear to include being orphaned, having a large number of siblings, parents being unemployed due to little or no education or being ill. Where one or both parents are working, they tend to be in low-paying jobs and are therefore still struggling to raise their children, let alone pay school fees.

In her letter titled ‘letter of happiness’, Lerato says:

‘I wish to thank you for your sponsorship to me. You have helped my parents because they do not have the money for the school fees. I am so excited and my family too is very happy about your help.’

Surprisingly enough, the girls report that getting the sponsorships lifts their spirits and reinforces their individual resolve to work hard and aim higher.This is, in fact, further emphasised by the teachers in their reports. The girls’ optimism, in spite of the setbacks they face, is very humbling and gives us hope that a positive change will come.These brave young women will definitely change their lives and those of their dependents in the not too distant future. What a privilege to be associated with such courage!

Allow me to reiterate our own ‘thank you’ to you all for helping Educare Fund to work with you to support the young women in their quest to change their lives and improve their communities for generations to come. We look forward to continuing to work together this year and I’d like to take this opportunity to let your know that Educare Fund will be participating in the Youth Week campaign in a few weeks’ time. We hope you will join us.

Your donations have given so much hope

The first batch of the 2017 feedback letters from the girls has reached our desk. Every one of them is grateful for your kind generosity which has enabled them to stay on in school and for those who have finished high school, the prospect of achieving their dreams. The main immediate impact of your donations is to release the girls from the worry of being laid off school or being excluded from classes because of non-payment of fees. This has the effect of enabling them to concentrate more on their studies, sometimes achieving much better results than would otherwise be the case. For example,

Lerato wrote:

Through your assistance and no longer having to worry about non-payment of school fees and subsequent exclusion from classes, I managed to obtain very good results for the final high school exams ( 2 A* , 1 B and 5 A).

From the bottom of my heart, I really thank you.

Likeleli says:

I am very optimistic as I write this letter to thank you for sponsoring me. I used to be expelled from classes everyday because of owing school fees. Now I am able to enjoy being at school.

Many of the other girls report much the same sentiment. Without your generous donations, these girls would continue to be in despair, but you’ve changed all that. They now feel more optimistic about their futures and it’s all thanks to you.

Because of you we are able to continue our work of supporting these young women, helping them finish high school. 2017 is a special year for Educare Fund as this is the organisations 20^th anniversary year. Without your help, this milestone would not have been reached.We are very lucky to have you as a donor and are proud that you have chosen to invest in our project.

I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donations in the past as well as during the recent campaigns. I hope we can count on your continuing support in the future.
