Help Educate 40 Bright Girls in Lesotho

We couldn't do it without you

Thank you for supporting Educare Fund in the 2019 GlobalGiving Girl Fund Campaign and International Women’s Day Campaigns. Together we raised enough to pay basic school fees for 10 of our 40 students. That’s 10 girls with a guaranteed place in class who will not miss any school days due to unpaid fees. A former beneficiary who finished high school several years ago thanks to your generous gifts reports that she has since completed a B.Ed degree. She is now working as a volunteer teacher at her former high school while awaiting return to university for post-graduate studies. Like others before her, Puseletso believes that your support has had a two-pronged effect. With her fees paid, she no longer had to miss classes and could concentrate better in class with the worry of unpaid fees removed. These are her own words:

…. I got the scholarship through IBEA (Educare Fund's partner organisation in Lesotho). That was when my life changed for the better. I was no longer at risk of being laid off school for owing fees, so I was able to relax and concentrate on my studies. Not only did I finish high school, but I have now graduated from university. I was the first member of my extended family to obtain a degree and I believe I motivated my younger sister to finish high school. Also, with my own fees covered, my parents were able to afford her fees. She is now preparing to go to university too.

I asked Paul, one of our long-term donors to tell us why he supports Educare Fund. This is what he says:

I have supported Educare Fund more regularly since 2013 when they first joined GlobalGiving. Having lived and worked in Africa for a good part of my life, I know how important education is in this continent and how poverty and gender differences can have a disproportionate impact on girls. Although this problem applies to the whole continent, I know that it is significantly more so for Lesotho. My experience is that Educare Fund does an excellent dedicated job of addressing this issue. I am happy to continue supporting this organisation.

The effect of your gifts is truly awesome

Dear friends

It is hard to believe that it is already the end of September. In some shops here there is evidence of preparation for Christmas. Alas, this is prompting me to contact various members of my family who have young kids to ask for suggestions for presents for these folk.

The end of the year is, of course, exam time for some of the young women you support. For them, the best Christmas present will be the completion of their high school education, if they are at that stage. For the rest, there is no better present than the certainty that you are there to help them continue their studies until they complete high school. This year we have 8 girls poised to write the final high school exams. They have reached this milestone in their life’s journey and are potentially on the threshold of a new bright future. This is all thanks to your generous donations, of course.

A recent conversation with one of the school principals reminded me of how far-reaching your support for the young women really is. The teacher told me that the effect of your donations reaches further than the individual girls who are direct beneficiaries. This is how she put it:

Our school has 4 girls receiving support from Educare Fund. In my opinion, this support reaches further than the individual girls. Having their fees paid improves the school’s cash flow and thus the overall running of the school. This means we are in a better position to give all the students a better chance of success. When these students succeed, it's not only the families and communities that benefit but the country as a whole. Educare Fund donors are doing a fantastic job changing lives in this country. Let them know we appreciate what they are doing.

This teacher’s words reinforce what we at Educare Fund know and believe. You may well have heard such thoughts voiced before, but they are no less true and significant now. I hope they make you realise just how awesome what you are doing is.
