Summary

Did you know that there are over 12 million stray dogs and cats suffering on the streets of Peru? Stray Animal Project partners with vets & volunteers to neuter and spay stray animals in the poorest areas of Peru. In addition, we also support local shelters and improve low-income families' lives by fixing their animals.

Challenge

There are over 12 million dogs and cats in the streets of Peru, and most of them live in horrible conditions. Part of this is cultural, as many people don't value these animals' lives, and part of it is structural, as the government doesn't dedicate any resources towards the issue (i.e. shelters are largely independent and funded by low-income families and members of the community, who understand the urgency of the situation but are unable to fund the surgeries).

Solution

Stray Animal Project funds neuter/spay programs and provides education on responsible pet ownership. We work in Peru's most vulnerable areas: Lima, Arequipa, and Piura, where the concentration of stray animals is highest. For every $15 you donate, we'll be able to neuter/spay one stray animal. The cost per surgery is very low thanks to our negotiations and relationships with animal associations, veterinarians, and experts in the field, which allows us to scale our impact.

Long-Term Impact

In just six years, one un-spayed cat or dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 kittens or puppies. By spaying 2000 stray animals, we'll prevent millions of animals from being born and suffering on the streets. This, in addition to our educational programs on responsible pet ownership, will improve the overall situation of stray animals in Peru.
