This project will support the refugee community on the Greek island of Samos. A new camp has recently opened which despite improvements in infrastructure and facilities, lacks a feeling of warmth and opportunity for residents to connect beyond the camp walls. That is why, we have been working together with the camp residents (our community volunteers), to create a greater feeling of community.
The Greek island of Samos lies barely two kilometres off the coast of Turkey making it a favoured destination of attempted crossings of people on the move fleeing from war, poverty and persecution. In September 2021, a new refugee camp was opened on Samos that replaces the old Vathy camp. Despite improvements in infrastructure and facilities, the new camp lacks a feeling of warmth, and opportunity for residents to connect beyond the camp walls.
We as Movement On The Ground are committed to playing a role and doing everything we can to bring positive change to the new camp on Samos. For us, it's about the people living inside the facility, not the facility itself. It's about the people having the right to feel safe, enabled and included. Our plan is to build up programs as part of our overall Camp to campUs philosophy that will improve the overall livelihood and address the specific needs of the community.
We will bring people together, bring more joy to their day will lead to a more dignified camp.
