The ongoing conflict in Syria has forced millions of people to flee, with many escaping to Iraq. Many have settled in areas with very limited support. For more than 20 years, Peace Winds has assisted conflict-affected families, particularly in the northern region of Iraq.
Peace Winds continues assisting families fleeing violence and conflict, providing them shelter, food, water, and clothing. Over the 2018 summer, heavy rains and flooding hit areas of northern Iraq. Peace Winds provided support and supplies to affected families, many of whom were Syrian refugees. The mountainous northern Iraq is prone to extreme temperatures in winter. Peace Winds is preparing to provide winter clothing, blankets, and other supplies to families to make the winter more bearable. These floods and weather conditions illustrate the need to build structurally sound homes and shelters so families can withstand disasters and have protection from the elements.
Families, both Syrian refugees and internally displaced Iraqis (IDPs), are struggling to establish "homes" and find employment. This September 2018, Peace Winds is partnering with the UN and the U.S. Government to upgrade the camps, constructing new shelters, and employing refugees and IDPs in construction. Peace Winds seeks additional funding to provide basic supplies including food.
Peace Winds partners with the refugees and IDPs to build strong communities through improved housing and increased economic and educational opportunities.
Peace Winds and the northern Iraq communities appreciate your support.
