Going deeper into the roots of the sale of girls for marriage.
The municipality of Metlatónoc, located in La Montaña, Guerrero, Mexico, has one of the highest rates of child marriage and poverty. This situation has increased in the wake of Hurricane Otis. Local sources report that an average of 300 girls a month are being sold. Child marriages occur, in addition to indigenous uses and customs, because the girls' families do not have the economic resources to provide them with a dignified life and development opportunities in education, health, and prepare them to access the labor market, so their parents are more likely to sell them to earn an income, while shifting the burden of their support to their future husband. This is accentuated by prevailing gender norms in the region, which conceive of the role of girls and women as caring for the home and other people (partners/spouses, minors, the elderly, sick relatives). These gender roles profoundly limit girls' and women's opportunities for fulfillment in the labor market and in community life. Specifically, the lack of job opportunities, financial insecurity and women's economic dependence are conditions that lead to domestic violence and predispose to the prevalence of the sale of girls.
Strengthening our program
Throughout 7 years we have been implemented the program "Help them not to reach the altar”, 12 localities of this region have changed the norms and gender roles to recognize and respect the human rights of girls and women, as well as their freedom to choose. Now 7000 girls will not be sold for marriage.
Due to the lack of employment for women we are including a new component in our program focused on financial education and entrepreneurship. Now girls and women are starting a chicken-raising business to improve their financial situation and quality of life.
How can we build a child marriage free Mexico?
Metlatónoc is composed of 66 localities, with your support we will reach the remaining 54 localities, through the strengthened program "Help them not to reach the altar" to eradicate the sale of girls for marriage and the prevention of social and economic violence experienced by girls and women in the region, in favor of their development and welfare.
“We can stop child marriage in Mexico. Your donation will make a difference in the lives of thousands of girls!”
