Dear GlobalGiver,
It is with great pride and excitement that I share that the week of November 25th, thanks to your support, two Acts were signed to prohibit the sale of girls in the communities of Metlatónoc, Guerrero, Mexico!
The first Act was in the town of La Juquila, and specified that the sale of girls and women is totally PROHIBITED and established sanctions for those who breach the agreement. The community made explicit that the Act is valid for the next 200 years! The second Act was in San Juan Puerto Montaña, where not only did the Act include all of the above, but it also recognized all rights of girls and women.
These two incredible achievements were possible because of the communities´ commitment and was a result of their wishes. It was only possible because of your support! Check out the photos below of the local leadership meetings and the signing ceremonies.
We know that it can be hard to wrap your brain around what this community change means for a girl like Esmeralda, who is 10 years old and lives in Yivnani. Take a look at Esmeralda- pictured below with her mom. For her mom, child marriage is now unthinkable. She told us “A person cannot be sold. And I'm not going to sell my daughter. My husband totally agrees with this.” Her daughter is only 10 years old, but she is already hearing insinuations. "´She's going to be my daughter-in-law and I'm going to buy her,´ they tell me, but whoever wants to be with my daughter has to prove himself: he has to study and respect her."
Fortunately, with the Acts you just made possible in La Juquila and San Juan Puerto Montaña, it will no longer be possible to sell Esmeralda into marriage. We continue working hard so that this change spreads across the mountain of Guerrero. What specifically is up next? With your continued donations, in March will be expanding to 3 new communities!
With gratitude,
Shoshana and Yo quiero Yo puedo
