Uganda has a maternal mortality rate of 375 per 100,000 live births. Women are dying due to complications arising during the pregnancy, childbirth or after childbirth. Clean birth practices in childbirth are recognised as critical to reducing the incidence of infection in childbirth. Access to a CBK is a core intervention to aid the prevention of infection during childbirth in low resource settings or during emergencies when access to essential clean birth supplies and a skilled birth attendant are not guaranteed. This project will distribute CBKs to 20,000 women and girls in 4 regions; Central, Eastern, Western and Northern regions of Uganda.

The aim of the project is to:

  • Provide 20,000 locally made CBKs into Uganda where excessive customs fees have stopped all kit dispatches being sent from BKFA Australia
  • Provide 20,000 CBKs as a core intervention to aid the prevention of infection during childbirth in lowresource settings or during emergencies when access to essential clean birth supplies and a skilled birth attendant are not guaranteed.
  • Work with partners in Uganda to assemble and distribute CBKs made to their cultural requirements and empower the local community by training and working with Traditional Birthing Attendants (TBA) to assemble and distribute the kits. To educate the local TBAs on the importance of a clean birth.
  • Provide 100 TBAs with $0.25 cent stipends for each of 200 kits they assemble to give $50 AUD towards supporting their families
  • Reduce environment impact associated with shipping the kits from Australia to Uganda

In December 2022, our Program Manager, Mercy Oloo travelled to Uganda to visit the production site for the kits. BKFA will be implementing the production of the in-country kits with two field partners: Uganda Australia Christian Outreach (UACO) and Supporting Opportunities for Ugandans to Learn Foundation (SOUL).

BKFA has been working with Uganda Australia Christian Outreach (UACO) for 20 years. UACO is located along Busabala Road, Lubaga South constituency in Kampala district and works to distribute birthing kits to the most vulnerable women in the area as well as other communities in Uganda.

Our Ugandan partners are working to identify manufacturers of the kit components in Uganda. Mercy Oloo, has met with the partners regarding distribution the first tranche, which will go towards the purchase of the components.

Over a 12-month period, the goal is to produce 20,000 Clean Birth Kits, reach 20,000 birthing women, 20,000 babies, and other health care workers as well as 50,000+ community individuals including women, girls, fathers, mothers, husbands, brothers, and children indirectly.
