Summary

Imagine young girls affected by armed conflict using computers and being engaged in STEM courses. Thousands of schools have been shut down, destroyed, or rendered inaccessible, leaving many children, especially girls, without access to safe learning environments. The project seeks to address this gap by providing girls aged 8 - 20 with access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education through hands-on materials. We aim to inspire creativity, innovation among girls.

Challenge

Many schools in Cameroon are underfunded, with the crisis in the Anglophone regions since 2016 worsening the situation. School closures and destruction have disrupted education, leaving girls aged 6-18 and above, vulnerable to gender-based violence, trafficking, and early pregnancies. Many drop out, facing poverty and exclusion, while children born lack healthcare and education. Limited exposure to STEM deepens inequality and curtails girls' opportunities for Cameroon's development.

Solution

Her Innovation Cameroon (HIC) will run a STEM empowerment program for young and teenage girls in crisis-affected Anglophone regions. It will provide STEM learning materials (books, kits, tablets, laptops), hands-on experiences through labs, fairs, trips, and mentorship, and create safe community spaces for learning. The program will also offer psychosocial support, counselling, life skills, and scholarships to help talented girls pursue STEM education and careers.

Long-Term Impact

By investing in STEM education for young and teenage girls in conflict-affected regions, this project will empower future female innovators to rebuild communities, break poverty cycles through knowledge and skills, and increase women's presence in science, technology, and leadership. It will also foster resilience by providing safe learning spaces. Educated girls uplift families and communities, driving peace and sustainable development in Cameroon. This will contribute to broad gender equality.
