Project Report | Aug 26, 2014
thank you for helping Sinat get to school

By Eve Saosarin | Director, M'Lop Tapang, Cambodia

Sinat writes her exams to enter public school
Sinat writes her exams to enter public school

13 year old Sinat*is going to be going to public school for the first time ever soon. Thank you for helping her to get there!

Sinat comes from a very poor family who could not afford to send her to study when she was younger. Her mother died and her father makes a meager living by working as a motorcycle taxi driver to support Sinat and her four siblings. They are among the millions of Cambodian families still living below the poverty line.

She had never even been inside a classroom until she met M’Lop Tapang four years ago. Since then she has been attending daily classes in the “Bridging Program” at M’Lop Tapang’s Main Center. The “Bridging Program” helps children who have been out of school for a long time (or have never been to school) catch up on their studies. The goal is to help them get back into local public schools, get an education and have a have a chance at a brighter future.

Just last month Sinat and other students wrote exams to test their grade level. Sinat passed her exams and will leave the program at M’Lop Tapang soon and be reintegrated into a local public schools at the Grade 7 level when the new semester starts.

One of the reasons Sinat was succeed in her studies was that she didn’t have to worry about being hungry. At M’Lop Tapang, Sinat and hundreds of other Cambodian children from poor families are provided with nutritious hot meals and healthy snacks while attending education or training programs.

On behalf of everyone here I wanted to thank you again for helping to make this possible when you donated to the “Hot Lunches for 500 Cambodian Children” campaign earlier. I know you will probably never have the chance to meet Sinat or the hundreds of other children you’ve helped but please know what you did made a big difference in their lives.
