Success story for reintergration

By Ali Mele | Executive Director

Project Report: Survivor Reintegration Support Summary

With support from the SGBV Emergency Fund and GlobalGiving, HOPLE implemented a rapid, survivor-centered intervention that enabled the safe reintegration of Zara and her child into a supportive family environment.

Within 10 days, Zara was traced, supported, and relocated to improved living conditions. The intervention combined psychosocial support, family mediation, safe shelter, and livelihood assistance—addressing immediate protection risks while promoting long-term resilience.

Context

Zara, a survivor of gender-based violence, faced stigma, economic hardship, and unsafe, overcrowded living conditions. These challenges posed serious risks to her wellbeing and reintegration, requiring urgent intervention.

Intervention

HOPLE delivered an integrated response:

  • Psychosocial support sessions for Zara and her family
  • Family mediation to promote acceptance
  • Relocation to a safer one-bedroom apartment
  • Livelihood support (tofu/awara business startup and training)
  • Provision of maternal and baby care items

Key Results

  • Safe reintegration into family
  • Improved shelter, safety, and dignity
  • Strengthened psychosocial wellbeing and family cohesion
  • Initiation of income-generating activity
  • Enhanced care and protection for the child

Financial Summary

  • SGBV Emergency Fund & GlobalGiving Support: 300,000
  • HOPLE Contribution: 123,000
  • Total Cost: 423,000

Funds covered shelter, basic needs, logistics, and livelihood support.

Challenges

  • Delay in tracing the survivor (resolved within 10 days)
  • Difficulty securing suitable housing

Flexible funding enabled timely response despite these constraints.

Impact

Zara has transitioned from vulnerability to stability. She now lives in a safe, supportive environment, cares for her child with dignity, and is building a livelihood for self-reliance.

Conclusion

This intervention demonstrates the importance of flexible funding and integrated SGBV response in achieving sustainable reintegration and recovery.

Acknowledgment

HOPLE sincerely appreciates the SGBV Emergency Fund and GlobalGiving for their critical support in making this intervention possible.
