On our journey to promote food sovereignty, we encounter stories of love for the land and commitment to the future every day. Today, we want to share Ramón’s story—a 69-year-old man who has lived his entire life in the rural settlement of Puesto Los Pérez, in Tucumán. Retired and devoted to his family, he shares his home with his son, daughter-in-law, and seven grandchildren.
Thanks to his participation in workshops and the support of ACDI’s field team, Ramón has begun implementing agroecological practices in his family garden. His motivation goes beyond feeding his family; he wants to pass this knowledge on to future generations, ensuring that the connection to the land and the production of healthy food continue within his community.
In his 50m² garden, he grows onions, lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, parsley, and squash, using a hose irrigation system that he has perfected over the years. A year ago, he started harvesting his own seeds, strengthening his autonomy as a producer. For him, the land has always been a space for learning, connection, and resilience.
"Every day in the garden is an opportunity to learn and grow," he proudly tells us. This space not only provides food but also brings him gratitude and refuge. "The garden is a legacy I want to leave to my children and grandchildren. Nothing makes me prouder than seeing the plants I grow with my own hands flourish and provide food for my family."
Ramón’s production is primarily for self-consumption, ensuring fresh and healthy food for his household. When there is a surplus, he shares or sells it to neighbors, thus promoting food security within his community.
But Ramón’s vision doesn’t stop there. He dreams of expanding his garden, growing a greater variety of crops, and, in the medium term, incorporating fruit trees and medicinal herbs. His greatest hope is that his garden will not only nourish bodies but also inspire minds, encouraging future generations to value agriculture, nature, and self-sufficiency.
Through stories like Ramón’s, we continue to promote the right to a healthy and sustainable diet. Thank you to everyone who supports this project and makes this change possible!
