Every Light Matters: Stories of Urgent Support

By Nataliia Kornievska | Lead of Corporate Partnerships

One of the core pillars of our work at Children of Heroes is Immediate Support for Vulnerable Families. Every day, we receive dozens of urgent requests from families who have lost one or both parents due to the war in Ukraine. Each request is carefully reviewed, and our team acts swiftly to cover the most pressing needs — because sometimes, help simply cannot wait.

Since 2022, Ukraine has been experiencing an ongoing energy crisis caused by constant attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. This means that children and their caregivers can be left without electricity for many hours each day. These power outages disrupt children’s emotional recovery, their sense of safety, communication with friends and teachers, and their ability to continue learning online. That is why, alongside other vital emergency support, we have made it a priority to provide the most vulnerable families with generators and backup batteries. This simple but critical help makes an enormous difference in their everyday lives.

Ivan and Daniil’s Story

Ivan (9) and his little brother Daniil (2) live with their mother Viktoriia, who is doing everything she can to rebuild a sense of stability after unimaginable loss. Before the full-scale invasion, the family lived in Kherson — working, building their home, and looking forward to the birth of Daniil. But in 2022, Ivan’s stepfather and Daniil’s father, Vitalii, was shot by Russian soldiers while driving his car, which was then stolen. The family fled occupied Kherson and eventually resettled in Lutsk, where relatives helped them buy a small apartment.

Ivan has autism and needs special care, routines, and educational support. His mother, Viktoriia, is on parental leave and dedicates all her time to the boys, trying to shield them from the trauma of losing their father while helping Ivan adjust to school. He loves to build things with blocks, listen to stories, and dream about traveling and making new friends — but his biggest wish right now is simply to live in peace.

During Ukraine’s blackouts, life became even more challenging. Without light or internet, Ivan couldn’t attend online lessons, talk to doctors, or stay connected with his classmates. Thanks to your support through this project, the family received a backup battery, which has been a true lifesaver. Now, even when the power goes out, Ivan can continue his studies and maintain some sense of normalcy. The battery also gives the family a vital feeling of security and stability — it means they are not left completely in the dark.

Why Your Support Matters

Every child’s story is unique — but they all share a need for safety, care, and hope for tomorrow. Emergency help like generators, batteries, and basic supplies are not just about physical comfort — they protect children’s mental well-being, their ability to learn, and their belief that life can get better.

Thanks to your donations, we can continue to respond to urgent requests like Ivan’s and Daniil’s every single day. Your generosity is more than charity — it is a light in the darkness for Ukraine’s children.

Thank you for standing with us. Together, we are helping children move from loss to hope.
