To keep 100 youths away from juvenile delinquent practices during summer holidays which usually exposes them to difficult socioeconomic situations, and to adopt positive behaviors to live healthy and happier lives as they go back to school. It is about giving hope to the hopeless youth who often lack the parental care during the summer holidays and left for themselves because parents do not have enough time due to the nature of their job to care for them.
The high rate of delinquency of youths during summer holidays is a call for concern. During the long vacation which usually runs for three months, many a youth are more often than not left to themselves, at home while their parents go out to fetch food for the family or carry out their routine activities. The impact of this situation is usually felt months later after schools have resumed with young girls showing signs of pregnancy or boys putting forth acts of juvenile delinquency.
Reach Out hopes to redress this situation through the Youth Engagement Program (YEP). The program is a great opportunity to bring youths especially young girls together, so as to distract them from risky behaviors that usually exposes them to drug abuse, prostitution, HIV/AIDS and STI'S. The program aims at empowering young girls and boys with life skills, health (HIV and reproductive health), arts and culture, socialization, hygiene/sanitation thus helping them to build up positive behaviors.
The project will benefit 100 young girls and boys living in the Tole and Buea localities. Primary beneficiaries of the project will be upper primary, secondary and high school youth aged 8-17 years. Secondary beneficiaries of this project will be the other young girls and boys in these localities and schools that beneficiaries come from as they will educate their peers in schools and communities on all that they have learned. The project will have a spill-over effect in the communities of youth.
