Love & care for abandoned babies Ukraine & Moldova

Part of our work in the abandoned babies programme is to help families in need and prevent child abandonment due to poverty.

Like in the case of Maria. Maria grew up in an orphanage. Both of her parents had drinking problems. Her father abandoned them when she was little, her mother started to drink more so all the children were taken to the orphanage.

From the age of 11 she lived in an orphanage, after leaving boarding school she enrolled for a cooking course and successfully completed.

A few years later she met her boyfriend and became pregnant. Her boyfriend tried to persuade her to have an abortion, but she was determined to raise this child even if she had to do it alone.

Nine months later her son was born, he has a very weak immune system and from the first days of his life, doctors prescribed him antibiotics, which further weakened his immunity.

She was on her own and needed help. She was worried she will not be able to help her son and provide for him.  She was given a room into a hostel. Maria asked for our help. We helped her settle in her new home and bought the necessary furniture.

She got a job as a cook in a nursery however just 2 weeks after working there only 2 weeks her son got sick. He was initially treated for a cold, but the diagnosis was not confirmed.

Also, pneumonia and bronchitis were suspected but not confirmed. At the moment, there is a suspicion of tuberculosis, the test results are expected soon. We helped her register the baby to a more qualified diagnostic centre.

Maria is very grateful for the help and believes that all the good people who come to her life are sent to her by God.

One element of the abandoned babies programme that your kind support has helped is in the children’s ward we fund in the  children’s hospital.

All children that have been abandoned are taken here and our volunteer Lyudmila  looks after them until they go the the orphanage or can be reunited with their guardians.

In the picture there is a baby girl called Ivanna. She was brought into the ward from her mother who did not look after her.  She weighed 3kg at the age of 6 months. She could not lift her arms and legs and she also suffers from pathology of the nervous system.

In the short time that Ivanna was in the hospital ward, Lyudmila looked after her every need and she also prays for all children in the ward.

Ivanna soon stopped crying for the first time and peacefully fall asleep thank to Lyudmila’s care. Of course her future will not be known and it may be a very harsh and difficult childhood if not fostered into a loving home. But, for the time she was with Lyudmila she had the love and care that every baby needs and deserves and it is scientifically proven that a child'd brain development will be substantially affected by the way they are cared for in teh early years.
