Women for Conservation at Bodega Bethel

By Libby Henrickson | Global Conservation Programs Coordinator

Dear Women for Conservation Community,

In 2025 Women for Conservation signed a partnership with Bodega Bethel, a school system in the Sierra Nevadas de Santa Marta, to provide supplementary environmental education programs. February marked our first on-the-ground events there led by our environmental educator Katrin; she visited the elementary, middle, and high school with lessons that invited students to reflect on the ways they interact with nature and build stronger connections with the outdoors.

At the elementary school, she led lessons on fungi, flora, and insects. She guided students through making mandalas from natural materials, and assigned follow-up activities to be completed before her next visit in April. At the middle school and high school she gave similar lessons, incorporating discussions on local conservation issues like water quality and recycling and helping students use binoculars and citizen science apps to identify species.

This initiative is part of our mission to provide environmental education to rural Colombian schools. Many rural schools don’t have the capacity to incorporate environmental education into their curriculum. Through our programs, we invite students and communities to build relationships with nature based on reciprocity and respect in some of the most biodiverse areas in the world. Environmental education is a key part of conservation; when students have access to environmental education, it shapes the choices they make about their career and lifestyle. It inspires stewardship. In a world where we are challenging the earth’s systems like never before, environmental education creates space for conservation to occur in a tangible and relevant way. When communities make environmentally friendly choices, habitats benefit. And when habitats benefit, species like the critically endangered blue-bearded helmetcrest can have room to flourish.

By donating to this project, you are directly making a difference in the lives of rural Colombian students and their communities, both natural and human. Your impact plants a seed that will grow to shape the next generation of young people and equip them to face climate change and biodiversity loss. Thank you for choosing to be part of our community of women fighting for change, one student at a time.

With gratitude,

The Women for Conservation Team.
