Dear friends

It is always great to start a New Year with good news and so 2019 is off to a good start with this story from Missionvale:

One of our 2018 school pupils, *Alfie, has performed so well on the rugby field, that he has received a full scholarship to attend a high school in Uitenhage, just 20 minutes’ drive from where we are. Attending this school would have been an impossible dream given Alfie’s family situation.

His family has lived in Missionvale all their lives. Alfie is part of the 3rd generation in his family that Sr Ethel has seen grow up in front of her; his own mother was in fact a pupil at our school! When Alfie was only 4 years old, his dad passed away and his mother became the only breadwinner for him and his little brother. She has meagre employment a few days of the week, but not nearly enough to survive on.

It is now 3 weeks since Alfie started at his new school, and he is settling in well into his new environment. It is undoubtedly a challenging one for him as he is surrounded by children from very different backgrounds to his own, but his tenacious nature has him taking this in his stride. He has even gone beyond the rugby field, now also making name for himself on the cricket field and was named “man of the match” during his very first official school game! We are bursting with pride.

You may ask how any of this links back to your contributions to our Nutrition Programme. Your donations are the very reason this success happened! Alfie knows what it is to go to bed hungry. His mother certainly knows it too. The weekly food parcel they receive from the Centre is what has sustained them. Other than the physical benefits that basic nutrition brings, it also brings a renewed sense of hope and opens possibilities that would have never been there before.

Behind every food parcel, is a donor making it possible. Behind every beneficiary is huge potential to what they can be. Through GlobalGiving, we are able to match the two and the results continue to amaze and inspire us. Thank you for being a part of Alfie’s life, and for believing enough in giving through us to find stars like him!
