September 2020 Report

By Linda van Oudheusden | Marketing Manager

Dear, dear friends

In South Africa, 1 September is always celebrated as it marks the first day of Spring.  At schools children are usually allowed to wear something bright and put flowers in their hair.  My own memory of Spring Days at school is that the weather almost never played along, and the winter air was still very much present!  And yet, there was definitely something in the air.  For many, Spring symbolizes a time of hope and I think never more so than now!  Much like that cold winter air, Covid is still with us, but slowly there are more and more signs that the worst is over.

On the opposite side of the world, we are aware that you are entering the autumn months which brings with it its own beauty.

And so the world has kept turning, seasons have changed and days have come and gone.  It almost seems unbelievable that time can continue no matter what happens!

Here in Missionvale, the last few months have melted into each other in a surreal way.  With our lockdown restrictions easing, we have been able to welcome people to the Centre again.  Although we have to keep distances between us and wear masks at all times, it is good to be together again.

In our school (Normoyle Primary) the children have been gradually brought back and quickly adapted to the “new normal”.  Some of the parents are volunteering to ensure the classrooms are sanitized every two hours.  The gardeners have returned as well and we look forward to the next harvest!

We are overcome with gratitude to be able to continue our work.  Your donations have carried us through!

There is a long road ahead still as we navigate our way through this crisis and the consequences on the already strained economy.

Our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to YOU, for walking this journey with us, and for the hope you bring with each contribution.  You are appreciated beyond measure.

PS:  All around South Africa, health workers, companies, students and organisations have been doing something called The #Jerusalema Challenge to uplift one another throughout this pandemic.  Our Grade 7 pupils decided to participate with the rest of the school sharing messages against Gender Based Violence.
