Give a Music Magician to Developmental Delay Kids

I know when to be quiet now.

Philip is a 4 years and 8 months old boy with congenital spina bifida. He is unable to walk well and may have problems controlling his bladder and bowels (going to the bathroom). Spina Bifida will obviously have considerable emotional effects, so he often experiences mood difficulties and low frustration tolerance with continuous crying. He has joined our class for 1 year and 9 months.

“When Philip entered the classroom at the beginning, he was unable to concentrate and kept watching other children. His emotions also affected others in the classes. Children born with myelomeningocele are at higher risk of lower extremity fractures, so Philip had to use orthotic device all the time. We are glad to share with you that he can walk smoothly with balance now, and also improved his hand positioning sense and functions. Through the musical activities, I found Philip can focus and follow the instructions well and beat the drums joyfully with confidence. Thank you again for your support and donation! It’s really a wonderful thing to see children’s progress in our classes.”

There are many types of possible developmental delay in babies and toddlers. Even we have to face various challenges to take care children with different conditions, we will keep moving forward because we know how important what we do. The music therapy is an important and good tools for children with development delay, and we will do our best to provide the better musical interaction with children. Never give up!

I can learn to ring the bell now.

Kenneth is a 5 years and 6 months old boy with autism. He has motor, cognitive, and language developmental delays. He has joined our class for 2 years and 11 months.

“I found Kenneth emotional for different reasons and always hard to express his emotions differently. I understood that it’s one of signs of sensory over-responsivity due to Autism's sensory issues. In the beginning, he could not communicate with us and became irritable and overactive in the class. We assisted Kenneth in engaging in musical activities and got his attention shortly to increase his participation in the class. I am very pleased to share with you that Kenneth is getting better to understand teachers’ instructions and improve his motor skills. We have confidence to facilitate meaningful progress for him through our project. I am grateful for your support to give hope to more children and families in Taichung, Taiwan.”

Due to "autistic" symptoms, we have to spend more time and patience to encourage children in the class because we know the difficulties of sensory challenges to Autistic children. The music therapy plays an important role in Autistic child growth and it is a well-established and risk-free technique for using musical interaction to help developmental delay children. We really appreciate your generous donation over the past years and your support to help more developmental children change their future. Thank you!

Early season's greetings to everyone!

I love to play the fun fishing game with Mom.

Yun is a 3 years and 5 months old girl. She has motor, cognitive, and language developmental delays. Her elder brother is a disabled child who has been served by our Day Care Center already. She joined our class in November, 2017 and transferred to Day Care Center in April 2018.

“I found Yun has motor and speech developmental delays at age 2. She didn’t make any progress in the kindergarten. In the beginning in TFCF, Yun could neither understand any instructions from teachers nor learn from classmates. However, she was attracted by the musical activities. Thus I knew that Music Therapy was a really positive way to help my girl.

Yun is getting better in the class and TFCF also gives myself time to enjoy being a parent. I thank you for giving me this opportunity to be a happy parent. All I learn from the class helps me increase positive interactions with my children. Thanks again for all the amazing project to developmental delay children.”

As we know that parents of children with delays typically report more parenting stress than parents of typically developing children, we hope to support and improve their parent-child interactions. We found that music therapy as an intervention could promote mutually responsive orientation and recognize the positive effects of music therapy intervention on parent-child interaction, parent stress, and parent-child relationship in families with developmental delays children. Even it may take a long time to help children cool down and stay calm at the beginning, parents could learn about the process of music therapy and how it works. Then they will be able to help children develop at home.

There are around 70 children who receive the benefits from this project every month. We are grateful for the support we have received from you and local volunteers.I want to take this time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I'm offering these early wishes here and going to prepare Christmas events for our children soon in TFCF Taichung City Child Development Center. See you next year!
