Mouniratou, an amazing and resiliant student
My name is Mouniratou. I am 16 years old and I am in the last year of middle school at the Lycee Moderne de L’Amitie (LMA). My family is from the village of Gossere, 22 km from Ouahigouya. In 2022, we were chased from our village by terrorists who threatened to kill us. We live in a camp for internally displaced persons near Ouahigouya. I was given the chance to attend the LMA, thanks to Global NEEED Burkina and Burkina Faso Girls’ Education Fund (BFGEF).
I am so thankful and grateful for the cantine at school. It:
- Ensures that I can have at least one meal a day.
- Helps me to form friendships with my new classmates and feel a sense of community far from the sounds of the gun shots in my village.
- Offers a fixed hour for our noon meal which provides a certain discipline and routine that is comforting to a displaced student like me who sometimes feels disoriented as I adapt to a new environment.
- Helps to reduce any disparities among students. All of us benefit from a healthy meal regardless of our social origins.
- Enables me to use my time after lunch productively to review lessons and complete homework, both of which would be difficult to do in the camp as there is no light at night.
I am determined to pass year-end exams in June which will allow me to continue on in secondary school. My goal after completion of secondary school is to study medicine. My dream is to specialize in gynecology.
I thank Global NEEED Burkina and Burkina Faso Girls’ Education Fund who do so much to support our education. I know that one day I will be able to support the education of other vulnerable children.

A Remarkable Student Forced From Home

Sali, a remarkable student, thanks to GlobalGiving
Good day, GlobalGiving partners,
My name is Sali. I am in middle school at the Lycee Moderne de l’Amitie (LMA). I am from the village of Gomboro. In 2023, the terrorists came and forced us to flee our village where we had lived peacefully. My parents brought us, my five brothers and me, to a camp for internally displaced persons in Ouahigouya. I was very fortunate to be given a place at the LMA thanks to Global NEEED and its partners. With the encouragement of the principal and the availability of the noon meal, I have been able to successfully continue my studies and qualify for the next grade. I pray that the terrorist attacks will end and all of us in the camps will be able to return home. In the meantime, I am most grateful for the opportunity to continue my studies at the LMA and to receive the noon meal that you all make possible.
When I finish secondary school, I want very much to study medicine. I want to become a doctor so I can care for injured and sick people. I saw so many injured with my family’s escape from our village and there was no one to treat them. Of course, I also want to support my family.
Thank you GlobalGiving donors for all that you do for us!

Future Environmental Scientist Expresses Gratitude

Oumou, future environmental scientist
Hello GlobalGiving partners. My name is Oumou. I am 22 years old and I’m in my final year at the Lycee Moderne de l’Amitie (LMA) in northern Burkina Faso. I come from a village 45 kilometers from the LMA and I stay in a nearby town. The school lunch canteen is a life saver for me and for other girls like me who walk six kilometers to and from school every day. It’s hard, especially now when the temperature is 45 degrees centigrade (113 fahrenheit).
Following my graduation, I hope to study environmental sciences at the university. My goal in life is to contribute however I can to the reduction of the advancement of the desert, the restoration of vegetation and the recovery of the quality of soil.
My most sincere gratitude and thanks for your support for our school canteen. It makes our efforts and successes possible!
