Fund's achievements in Palliative Care Program

By Anna Gutman | Coordinator of Fundraising department

Palliative Care Program is one of the most important activities of the Charity Fund “Tabletochki”.

We purchase medications, care products and presents in order to make the last months and days of our wards’ lives as comfortable and painless as possible.

Dima has been ill since summer 2016. During the first block of therapy there occurred complications, which resulted in purulent meningitis, osteomelitis (decomposition) of the right upper jaw. Eventually the osteomelitis process reached such an extent, that the doctors predicted lethal outcome. However with the help and persistence of our doctors, the process was stopped. Dima is alive and continues the treatment.

Later there occurred a new complication - pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, which means that Dima should come to the hospital to get the treatment every day.

Dima’s mom is afraid to use public transport in order to reach the hospital, as the boy has a very low immunity and can easily get infected. In addition he has a face deformation, and the reaction of people on that is pretty ambiguous.

As a result mother carries her child to the hospital, which is 1 km away from home, on her hands. In order to help the family we presented Dima a bicycle. The boy and his mother were extremely happy.

In July-September 2017 we bought the following medications for our wards: Levicitam, Verospiron, Nalboufine, Tobramycin, Mercaptopurinum, moksiklav, Refortan, Methotrexatum, Filgrastim, Nalbuphinum, Vincristine, Fluconazolum, Albumin, Panangin, Trental, Nexium, Panangin, Epobiokrin, Levetiracetam, Domperidone, Fluconazolum, Lasix etc.

We also purchased the following care products and consumables: Electro-stimulator, syringes, non-sterile gloves, diapers, wet wipes, antiseptic, gauze bandages, urological pads, catheters, bandages, gloves, non-traumatic ointment bandages of Atrauma Ag 10*20, adhesive bandages 10*15 etc.

  • In July 2017 we bought medications, medical equipment and provided financial help to 14 families for the sum of 4201 USD.
  • In August 2017 we bought medications, medical equipment and provided financial help to 17 families for the sum of 4470 USD.
  • In September 2017 bought medications, medical equipment and provided financial help to 14 families for the sum of 2274 USD.

Apart from providing families with medications and consumables we give psychological help. In July-September we constantly helped 63 families. The salary of the psychologist for the whole period (July-September) equaled 700 USD.

However our mission is not only to help palliative families in their struggle for life but also to support them after their children pass away.

Thus 17.09 2nd year in a row we held the “Remembrance Day”. This is the day when the families who lost their children to cancer, get together in order to share their experience and to show that life still goes on after the child loss.

During the “Remembrance Day” we, together with parents, grandparents, brother, sisters, volunteers and doctors recalled children, watched their photos, grieved and smiled. We got to know each other better and planted apple trees in memory of every child.

There were 37 families present at the “Remembrance Day” this year.
The budget of the event was 2077 USD.

We plan to hold this day every year. We are sure that every next year there will be more families taking part in "Rememberance Day", in order to get and give the support to those families, who lack it.
