Peruvian Hearts believes strongly that the psychosocial health of our scholars is as important as their educational opportunities. To that end we feel blessed to have hired a dynamic young psychologist who has become an important part of our in-country PH team. Her energy and loving heart has added a beautiful spirit to our Peruvian Hearts family in Peru.
Miriam works deeply with each of our girls to provide psychosocial support that can help them learn and clarify values, overcome life’s obstacles, and maintain a positive attitude toward life even in the face of uncertainty and occasional hurdles. She works with our scholars in a dynamic way both individually and in small groups. She recently began working with our parent support group and has developed engaging teaching activities to help them learn how they can best support their daughters and their goals. Her work has helped our scholars’ parents gain a greater appreciation for their daughters’ daily efforts to transform their lives and the lives of their families.
Many of our girls have experienced trauma in their lives including physical and/or emotional abuse as well as the trauma of growing up in poverty. Miriam works with our girls with a great sense of sensitivity and care. She provides strategies that help our scholars increase their resilience and ability to overcome obstacles in their everyday lives. She helps them to develop strategies to cope with disappointment and hardship while maintaining a sense of hope and optimism.
The girls have all come to love Miriam. She is a highly valued member of our team and her work has made a genuine difference in the lives of our scholars. While scholarships and service work are helpful, they are not enough to overcome a life lived in extreme poverty with food insecurity, family violence, and chaos. Miriam’s support plays a key role helping our girls gain the confidence they need to dream and accomplish their goals, break the cycle of generational poverty, and become leaders in their families, communities, and country. Their newfound confidence and self-esteem helps take necessary steps to move forward in their own lives and make a difference in the lives of others, as they become the next generation of women leaders.
Thank you, Miriam, for your commitment and support to our scholars and to Peruvian Hearts. On behalf of Miriam and our whole team in Peru, we want to once again thank our loyal supporters who have followed our journey and the journey of our scholars. Your generosity has helped us bring psychosocial support to our girls and we feel blessed and thankful to have you as part of our Peruvian Hearts family.
