Philippines - Save 1 million lives

The Philippines is facing a critical challenge in organ donation and transplantation. According to data published on GlobalGiving, more than 32,000 Filipinos are currently undergoing dialysis, yet only 6 organ transplants were performed in the entire country in 2021. With a population exceeding 109 million and a life expectancy of 71.2 years, the mismatch between the number of patients in need and available transplants represents a major public health and social crisis.

DTI Foundation’s project “Philippines – Save 1 Million Lives” addresses this gap by investing in capacity building, specifically through the training of one Filipino healthcare professional. The selected participant receives DTI’s internationally recognised Transplant Procurement Management (TPM) training, followed by a two-week internship in a top Spanish transplant centre. This practical, hands-on immersion allows the professional to acquire competencies in donor identification, family approach, clinical donor management, and coordination of donation processes.

Upon returning to the Philippines, the trained professional becomes a multiplier of knowledge, contributing to:
• strengthening hospital donation protocols
• supporting the development of local donation committees
• raising awareness among medical teams
• contributing to an ethically robust and sustainable donation system

Advancing Organ and Tissue Donation in Philippines to Save Lives

Over the past months, DTI Foundation has continued to work in the Philippines region to promote organ and tissue donation and transplantation as a way to save and improve lives.

Through our collaboration with local healthcare professionals, institutions, and community stakeholders, we have shared knowledge, built awareness, and fostered systems that enable more people in need to receive a life-saving transplant.
