Project Report | Oct 31, 2019
New opportunities to learn new skills

By Lesley Morris | Operations Manager

Since our last report, a further 20 young people united to embrace their entrepreneurial skills and work, as the group did last year, to develop new t-shirt designs for Teens Unite which will go into production, being sold to raise funds and awareness for the Charity.

The young people were divided into teams, briefed, allocated an external mentor from the business world and allocated time with designers.  The teams were advised that their designs, promotional materials and their business plans were to be showcased to a team of Judges, including Teens Unite’s co-founder and iconic fashion designer Karen Millen, OBE, at the formal celebration dinner.

As the teams got to work, they were visited by the team from New Skills Academy, who support us by providing online learning opportunities for the Teens.  The guys have a lot of experience of business start-ups and genuine entrepreneurial minds and were happy to offer plenty of advice which the young people couldn’t get enough of.

After lunch, which further fuelled the creative juices, the Teens got their stands ready for their business pitch.  They displayed their printed sample, financials and marketing plans.  Once these were looking professional, they went off to get themselves ready for the Judges.

Joining Teens Unite’s co-founder were the Head of Global PR at a renowned UK retail giant, a fashion writer and one of our beneficiaries who was on last year’s winning team.

Every one of the young people played their part in presenting to the panel, whether it was delivering cost ideas, marketing plans or sharing details of their personal journeys which had shaped the design concept, every one of them stepped up.

Pitches and questions over, the Judges then faced the difficult task of selecting a winner. While they deliberated, the Teens joined many of our supporters for a Celebratory Dinner.

At the end of the evening stand out individuals were recognised as well as the overall winning design revealed.  Awards for leadership, team players and entrepreneurial skills were given.

Through the process the young people

  • Developed skills such as teamwork, public speaking, conflict resolution, time management and active listening
  • Had an insight in to the business world
  • Gained genuine work experience
  • And rebuilt confidence and motivation to return to education or employment and plan for a future beyond cancer

The winning t-shirt design can be seen and purchased from the shop on our website, www.teensunite.org

To everyone who has supported this project a HUGE thank you.
