Since our last update, we have continued to work with the young people we support, introducing new workshops and activities, all with the same overall objectives
In our last report, we updated on how we have been very fortunate to develop a partnership with a local company who employ a wide range of staff – everything from trades, to logistics and planning through to customer service teams talking to their customers and helping them.
This partnership is invaluable for Teens Unite as they are offering structured workplace experience for the young people who are ready to consider a return to work, or take their first steps in the working world after completing their education.
So often, these young people are “derailed” by their illness, and their once clear plans for the future need to be rethought as the effects of their illness and treatment have taken a toll, sometimes physically.
We are delighted that two young men we support will be undertaking the first of these structured placements this month. One young man was set on a career in the armed forces. His brain tumour and the effects of treatment make this no longer a possibility. He will be taking on a placement with a plumber to see if this is a trade that he would like to pursue as a career.
In other activity, we have returned to the Escape Rooms, which, through a set of fun challenges provides the young people with an opportunity to learn and utilise key transferrable skills, such as problem solving, time management, conflict resolution and team work, as they worked together to solve the clues, and escape the room in the given timeframe.
Another of our recent partnerships, with a local kitchen company, who have fully functional demonstration kitchens, has been invaluable to us in delivering cookery workshops. The cookery day is designed to promote healthy eating and encourage independent living. Together with the other young people, they learn culinary skills and master dishes that they can easily recreate at home. They learn about nutrition and what is needed to ensure a healthy balanced diet.
We’re busy getting ready for our Annual Activity Stay, where twenty of the young people come together for an unforgettable week taking on many elements of the Positive Steps program culminating in an Apprentice Style challenge, which we will tell you all about next time.
For now, we offer our sincere thanks for your continued support.
