Getting ready to embrace positive thinking, confidence and self discovery

74% of young people diagnosed with cancer are worried about the impact that cancer will have on their future employment. Our workshops help to provide the confidence for these young people to look forward to a future beyond illness and are designed to help them see that their chances of success have not been impacted by the time they have had to take out of work or education.

In the time since our last report we have been working to confirm the taster sessions and speakers for our bi-annual event “Discover you” which brings together over 100 young people and their families for a motivational conference. The conference energises and engages the young people to discover what they can achieve; sign-post them to new opportunities and give them the confidence to succeed. They will hear from inspirational speakers, who have fought against their own struggles, take part in workshops and taster sessions to give them new ideas and give them the opportunity to speak to others with similar experiences.

We have confirmed speakers Chris, who since having cancer as a teenager and defying medical expectations, has spent two decades studying and working with the human body, is now a leading back pain expert and an international speaker.

And, Dylan, who in January last year, aged 23, was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. Dylan is an MMA Fighter, and through his life has fought more than most, but he knew this fight would be his toughest. With his incredible positive mental attitude and his physical strength allowing him to maintain a training schedule through his treatment. Dylan has recently entered remission and will join us to share his story and his incredible positivity.

As well as hearing these two speakers, the young people we support will have the opportunity to attend sessions with professionals who can help them with budgeting and finance questions, support them with their CV writing and interview skills and techniques.  We will also have taster sessions to help the young people relax and start some gentle physical activity – for some, the first since their diagnosis.

We are very lucky to have been introduced to a unique employment agency and are very excited for them to join us on the day, not just to hear the stories of some of their own team, but to hear how they can help the young people.

The Ability People, are a team of specialist consultants finding genuine work opportunities for anyone with any kind of disability or impairment. This highly skilled team, all facing their own challenges, source and recruit from the global disability population and place people with household named companies as well as a growing base of SME.

For our next report, we look forward to sharing with you pictures and feedback from what we anticipate being an exceptional day for some of the seven young people aged 13-24 who, every day in the UK hear the words “you have cancer”. Thank you for your support of our work.
