Bring clean water to 100 villages in Tanzania

Thanks to your generosity we have been able to bring clean water to another school at Rusesa, Kigoma. Previously students had to carry dirty water from a stream 3 km away, which had significant negative impacts on their health and studies.

Grace, 13 says, now we have a pump at school the situation is much better.  Before we wasted many hours each day carrying water for all our needs, and people were often sick from the muddy water. Now we have more time for studying.  I thank God for this opportunity and I am determined to study hard to realise my dream to become a doctor and help my community.  So, on behalf of all the 800 students at Rusesa School and our families I would like to thank TDT and everyone who helped us get this water pump.

The situation in Tanzania remains concerning.  We are hoping that the new president will change the government's position on COVID and allow people to talk about it openly. We are continuing to urge all the communities we work with to take it seriously and practice social distancing, especially inside, and good hygiene.

However this is very difficult, particularly when access to clean water is so difficult.  Therefore we were so pleased, thanks to your donations, to be able to fund a bore hole and rope pump at Ntamya School. 

Prior to this the 500 students, and villagers from the surrounding villages had to walk three miles every day to collect water from a run-off of a river. A river that would often dry up. As well as being an unsafe water source that was shared with animals, this meant that girls (as it is usually girls collecting the water) would waste many hours a day in this task. 

Benedicto, our local rep in Kigoma has perfected a technique for hand drilling boreholes like this, and has trained local youth on how to make and maintain simple rope pumps. He has a list of many schools like Ntamya that still need access to water, including Rusesa.
