In the country side, girls in primary schools have almost no access to proper protection when they have their menstruation.
Girls will either use a piece of cloth or do not go to school. When using cloth, there is often some hygiene problem. It is also not full proof and it can make the girl loose self respect in front of the other children.
Very often girls will miss school 3 to 5 days per month. This generally happened in the last 2 years of primary school when girls start with their menstruation.
A concequence is poor results at the exam at the end of the primary school.
In rural area, families sometimes have to choose who is sent to school. Girls do not have the priority to be sent to school since when married they will "belong" to the family of the husband. If they have poor results at school, it is not helping to have more girls sent to school.
Proper protection for menstruation is an important tool for girls to be able to emancipate.
The washable protections we propose are produce in Burkina faso by a local association which has 5 full time employees (4 women).
Resources for those protection kits will help the girls and help the association which make those kits.
