The importance of the circus as an empowering and

By Laurence LIGIER | Project Leader

Dear Friends,

CAMELEON Association Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of young girl survivors of sexual abuse in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. A cornerstone of our therapeutic approach is the integration of circus arts, which serve as a unique medium for healing and empowerment. This report highlights the significance of circus therapy in the recovery journey of our beneficiaries.

The Role of Circus Therapy

Since 2004, CAMELEON has incorporated circus arts into its rehabilitation programs, recognizing their therapeutic and empowering potential. Engaging in activities such as juggling, trapeze, and acrobatics enables the girls to rebuild self-esteem, develop trust, and foster resilience. The discipline and creativity involved in circus arts provide a constructive outlet for expressing emotions and overcoming trauma.

Key Achievements:

  • Therapeutic Workshops: In 2019, over 300 circus workshops were conducted, offering a safe space for survivors to explore their potential and regain confidence.

  • Public Performances: The beneficiaries showcased their skills in 30 public performances, reaching approximately 10,000 individuals. These events not only celebrated the girls' progress but also served as platforms to raise awareness about children's rights and the prevention of sexual violence. For example, on December 1, 2024, six IH girls and 10 AC girls performed in a Christmas concert, showcasing their talents in dance and circus.

  • International Collaboration: For over five years, professional circus artists from France's École Nationale des Arts du Cirque (ENACR) have volunteered with CAMELEON, providing specialized training and fostering cultural exchange.

Impact on Beneficiaries

Engagement in circus arts has led to notable improvements in the girls' physical and emotional well-being. The structured environment of circus training promotes discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Many participants have transitioned from learners to trainers, further enhancing their leadership skills and sense of responsibility.

Conclusion & Future Directions

Circus therapy has proven to be a vital component in the holistic rehabilitation of young survivors of sexual abuse. CAMELEON remains committed to expanding this program, continually adapting to the needs of our beneficiaries. We extend our sincere gratitude to GlobalGiving and all our supporters for enabling us to harness the transformative power of circus arts in our mission to heal and empower.
