Smile Charity South Sudan aims to strengthen child protection systems and services in Renk and Twic East Counties, Counties heavily impacted by displacement, conflict, and poverty. This project will directly benefit 1,000 vulnerable children, train 40 social workers and child protection officers, and establish two community-based Child Protection Committees (CPCs) in each county. It will support survivors of abuse, neglect, and exploitation through structured case management.
In Renk and Twic East Counties, children are increasingly exposed to protection risks such as neglect, exploitation, abuse, and early marriage. Years of armed conflict and displacement have weakened family structures and social safety nets. The absence of formal child protection mechanisms, trained social workers, or reliable referral systems means that vulnerable children are often left without help. Cultural stigma and lack of awareness further prevent communities from acting to protect child
This project introduces a structured case management system where trained case workers will identify, assess, refer, and follow up with at-risk children. Simultaneously, prevention activities such as awareness campaigns, parenting education, and school sessions will address root causes of child protection violations. The creation of Child Protection Committees in each county will empower community members to actively engage in monitoring and reporting concerns.
Over time, the project will cultivate a protective environment for children by reducing stigma around reporting, improving community engagement, and building a skilled local workforce of child protection actors. It will lead to fewer incidents of child abuse and neglect, and ensure that when they do occur, children receive timely and effective care. Educated parents and empowered communities will take on greater responsibility for child wellbeing, thereby establishing a sustainable and community
