This project will provide funds to protect inmates in Nigerian correctional facilities from the COVID-19 virus & other diseases. Typically 50-100% over capacity, these facilities provide ample breeding ground for spread. Our project will provide masks, education, and sanitation equipment to prison inmates to protect them while incarcerated, as well as during transport to & from court to resolve their cases. Anchor Heritage's skill acquisition programs will continue once normal operations resume
The Kirikiri correctional centers in Lagos, Nigeria built for 3,897 inmates, currently hold >6,500. The dingy, damp and dimly-lit rooms provide ample opportunity for various infectious diseases to spread. The inmates lack the funds to purchase their own personal protective equipment and the space to appropriately social distance. This project will to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 among Kirikiri's inmates as well as an additional 5,500 inmates at 5 other centers in Western & North central.
AHI's initiative will provide masks, hand sanitizers, soap, clippers, etc. to improve sanitary conditions in the prisons and protect inmates, staff and visitors when appropriate social distance cannot be maintained. In addition, we will provide Covid-19 workshops to educate inmates on actions they can take to protect themselves and provide branded apparel that will reinforce the messaging afterwards.
In this phase, our target is to reach 12,000 inmates across six correctional centers in Nigeria, which will help prevent the spread of the virus within the centers but also prevent community spread through prison staff and visitors. By improving sanitary conditions, in the long run other diseases will also be curbed at these centers and the health and welfare of inmates will improve.
