The "Flowers in bloom" project aims to improve the reception conditions of sexually assaulted minors in Addis Ababa. Aleimar joins a project that Il Sole Onlus and Integrated Family Service Organization (IFSO) are carrying out since 2002 providing medical, psychological and social assistance to abused minors and their families, guaranteeing adequate nutrition and hygienic conditions, enhancing psychological support. The project aims to strengthen the reception services of two family houses.
Sexual violence against children is a serious phenomenon in Addis Ababa.Extreme poverty forces a large part of the population to live in insecure, promiscuous conditions, sharing extremely small spaces without any basic service. It is common for a family of 5/6 people to live in shacks built in plastic, wood and recycled materials, without electricity and toilets, next to other families in the same conditions. When a child or a girl suffers abuse or sexual violence, parents often do not receive support.
The "Flowers in bloom" project aims to improve the reception conditions of minors, guaranteeing adequate nutrition and hygienic conditions, enhancing psychological support through the introduction of rehabilitative therapies: theater, music and photography workshops. Up to now more than 850 children have received psychological and social support, medical care, temporary hospitalization and financial support. Ensuring a safe environment is necessary for the rehabilitation of the children.
The project aims to promote rehabilitation and social reintegration of 40 boys and girls, between 5 and 14 years old, victims of sexual abuse. In order to avoid the repetition of the abuse, we will provide better psychological and social assistance to the minor and his family through the services offered by the two family houses. The assistance in the family house is a temporary solution, therefore when conditions permit the minors are reintegrated in the original families.
