Hug Project 2024 Achievements:

Dear supporters, Happy New Year! As we now approach 2025, The Hug Project Thailand would like to express our utmost gratitude for your contributions which have allowed us to assist and equip many cases throughout the year. Without your generosity, none of these accomplishments would have been possible.

Providing Direct Support to Victims

47 sessions of psychosocial
35 sessions of therapeutic recreation
30+ hours of counselling

In 2024 we have dedicated hundreds of hours to supporting victims. Those hours were targeted toward psychosocial services, therapeutic recreation, and counseling services with most of the hours being towards psychosocial services. This year has proved more difficult with the flood of different cases we have been a part of, some being extremely mentally and physically challenging.

Equipping Ourselves and Others

This year we have been blessed with different opportunities to train prosecutors and social workers involved in trauma-informed justice practices. With our experience, we were able to empower professionals and the unequipped to best ensure victims' needs are met with understanding and care. Furthermore, with your help, we worked closely with private hospitals to secure medical care for victims and equip counselors with tools and training to provide specialized care for our victims.

A formidable case towards the end of this year occurred with a young girl, a victim of sexual abuse. With your generosity, this young girl has received professional counseling for the last three months after enduring extreme sexual abuse by her father. Though her case remains severe, your support has ensured that she has access to medical and mental health resources that will allow her to take steps toward healing.

Innovative and Localized Initiatives

On an exciting note, during a trip to Kohn Kaen, a prosecutor's office asked us for an anatomical doll to be used for interviews by victims of sexual assault. We collaborated with local artisans to create these anatomical dolls in Kohn Kaen, as they are not universally sold. Anatomical dolls are not widely known, but has been beneficial for us and others to understand what happened to the victim, especially with kids. These dolls serve as valuable tools that allow young victims to communicate their experiences of abuse in a safe and supportive manner.

Relapse as Part of Change

Relapse as Part of Change: A Journey of Healing for Victims of Online Sexual Exploitation

It has been two years since our team took 'C' into our care (C is not her real name). C was a victim of online sexual exploitation, and she also struggled with self-produced sexual images. In this story, our team would like to highlight the importance of understanding and being trained in the "Stages of Change Theory" when working with victims of human trafficking or online sexual exploitation. Without understanding relapse, we may lose our way in supporting their healing journey.

For survivors of online sexual exploitation, healing is a profound journey marked by both progress and setbacks. In this context, relapse may not refer to a return to harmful behaviors but rather to moments when old wounds resurface, or the emotional toll becomes overwhelming. Understanding relapse as a natural part of change can be a powerful step toward healing.

Survivors often experience relapses in their emotional well-being, such as sudden anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or distressing flashbacks. These moments can feel disheartening, making it seem like progress has been undone. However, it’s crucial to recognize that these relapses are not failures but part of the ongoing recovery process.

We have been trained to respond to our clients' relapses by encouraging them with phrases like, “You’ve done well for three months already; we believe next time you can go even longer.” Rather than focusing on the setback, we help them focus on hope. This is easier said than done. We often have to remind ourselves that relapse is part of change, and change takes time.

By reframing relapse as a component of change, survivors can approach their recovery with patience and understanding. Each step, including the challenging ones, contributes to a richer, more resilient recovery path. It’s a reminder that healing is a continuous journey, where setbacks are simply part of the evolution toward a healthier and more empowered self.

Our Hotline Support

Since January 2027, our team has supported over 16 cases through couselling and psycho social support. There were many cases that reached out to both our Facebook Page and our X's inbox. The majority of our clients have expressed that they do not wish to leave since they were abused and sexually exploited online. Our social workers have to work almost around the clock to help support the clients and coordinated with related law enforcement for investigation.

With your support, we were able to refer clients with suicide or self harm risk to get couseling with profession from both online and in person. Most of our clients are young and do not have financial capacity to have access to profession couseling. One of the girl has expressed how much art therapy has help her get better from her abuse trauma by her own teacher. She has continue to get in person couseling at our child advocacy center and support throughout the weak from our social worker.

For another case of a client who was raped by her step father since she was 12. She is currently 17 years old and have been suffering trauma. She has a hard staying in school. Our team was able to meet with her teachers and school leadership and explained her situation and asked them to allow her to continue on her study. She was finally able to complete 11 grade and only have 1 year left to graduate from highschool. With your support, our social worker was able to support her medicaion and have access to government services through out the year. Our goal is for her to finish high school and we have talked to her about getting her a new motorbike with the condition that she must finish high school. Our team is not the point of contact for her guardian as her grandmother is very old and her mother ran away when the step father was arrested 5 years ago. We have seen how important couselling is for all of our clients.

While we are working with many children with trauma, we also continue to develop teaching tools that will help protect children from child sexual abuse. With this report we would like to share with you first time of our newly launce video of how Thai children can understand grooming process in an easy language. Thank you.
