School outreach
WRC began the School Outreach program in 2015. After an initial school-based needs assessment WRC approached and was endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to work with secondary schools in targeted village communities. This endorsement enabled WRC to establish a partnership with the principals at Wat Chork Secondary School and Sandachdekchou Hun Sen Krous Secondary School to provide gender education to student boys and girls age 14-17 in the two lower secondary schools. The key intervention provides two informal education workshops in each school on alcohol awareness, peer pressure, women's rights and gender equality. This year, to reach more students and parents, WRC launched the first open leaning event at school raising awareness of gender based violence and it's impact, also focusing on the prevention of any form of violence in the family and community. We had 105 participants, students teachers and parents are registered to the event. We also engaged many of our stakeholders and invited the people from Children Council for Women and Children, Police chief, Lawyer and the school Principal to be a guest speakers to share their knowledge, and answer questions related to domestic violence, divorce procedure and how to file the complaint to the court.
Workshops
WRC continued to bring together women to learn and share experiences this month, with a good turnout at each workshop session. Over March and April we have delivered workshops to 159 participants. Financial Literacy workshops were particularly popular, and participants enjoyed interactive activities using toy money and real life examples to learn about saving, budgeting and expenses. Women’s Health workshops created a safe and welcoming space to discuss women’s health and self-care. Family planning was an important topic, empowering women by teaching them about their rights, options and how and where to seek support. Our Positive Parenting classes taught parents that self-care is important, and that to look after your family you need to look after yourself. The workshops also increased awareness about the implications of actions, and taught important anger management skills to improve positive parenting outcomes. Participants learnt fun activities they can do with their children at home to build stronger relationships with greater communication.
Hear from our participants:
'When I know how to manage my money it is the part of the happiness in my family.'
'When I learn about the women's health it helps me in takes care my health and practice my health like about checking my breast to find the breast cancer and know how my health and body change so I can protect myself from the women’s health problem.'
'Before I feel afraid and Shy but after join with the group and the facilitator make me braved in sharing and talking.'
