Bed Nets Help Happy Recipients Sleep Better

Dear Project Supporters,

Thanks to YOU, the project received $297.77 from 8 donors since our last report and 25 beneficiaries received new insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets.

In the photos you can see some of the kids holding nets and a special Thank You sign for YOU.

According to The Guardian, This mosquito-borne disease (malaria) still claims more than 500,000 lives every year – 90% of them in sub-Saharan Africa, mostly children under five. Not only does this bring a heavy human cost, but a heavy economic cost too. Children miss out on school, parents cannot go to work. As much as 40 per cent of health spending in Africa goes on fighting malaria. All in all, it’s estimated that malaria costs Africa more than $12 billion every year.

Over fifty people from the Upper Mellon and Beccle Street community arrived to receive bed nets at our last distribution. They expressed that, “The increase in the population in the community and poor sanitary measures is causing a lot of breeding sites for mosquitoes, hence the increase in the number of malaria cases not only in our community but also in other areas.”

We were only able to service twenty-five beneficiaries. Those that received bed nets said, "We are confident with the bed nets we are no longer vulnerable to malaria. We will surely enjoy the rainy season sleep. Thank you GlobalGiving".

Because of YOU, children who are most at risk are now able to sleep safe and sound. But, hundreds of families are still in need of bed nets in the Wellington community. Each family needs 2-3 nets per household. YOUR continued support will help us provide this life-preserving gift to them today!

No More Getting Sick with Malaria

Haja and daughter - mosquito nets = zero malaria

Dear Project Supporters,

Thanks to YOU, the project received $120 from 6 donors since our last report and 12 new insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed to project beneficiaries. In the photo below you can see some of the kids holding nets and a special Thank You photo for YOU.

Meet Haja and Kadima - recent mosquito net recipients (see video). Haja and Kadima live in a family house at Mellon Street in the Wellington community. Haja is the mother of Kadima. They were in need of bed nets for a long time. Now, because of YOUR help, they are very happy recipients and will sleep better knowing they are protected against mosquito bites and malaria.

In the video, Haja (Kadima’s mother), introduces herself and extends her appreciation for the mosquito bed nets that they have received. She explains that previously Kadima was getting sick with malaria. Now, with the bed nets, she is no longer getting sick. They are no longer being bothered by mosquitoes and malaria.

Haja expressed her gratitude by saying, “I really, really appreciate. Thank you!”

Over 70 Mosquito Nets Distributed to Save Lives

Dear Project Supporters,

Because of YOU, well over 70 project beneficiaries received new insecticide-treated mosquito nets to fight against malaria in Sierra Leone since our last report.

Over the past 9 months or so, a lot of effort and focus has been placed on addressing the Ebola epidemic. This has diverted efforts to control malaria in the region. Because some of the symptoms of both diseases (such as fever) are similar, many infected people have been misdiagnosed. Their deaths could have been prevented had they taken the simple precaution provided by the use of bed nets.

According to MSF, "More than 3,000 deaths and 10,000 cases suggest it is Ebola, but the right answer is malaria. In 2013, there were more than 1.7 million cases of malaria in Sierra Leone, a small country in West Africa with a population of six million. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 4,326 people died of the disease (malaria) that year.

Meet Kadima and Haja - recent mosquito net recipients (pictured). Haja and Kadima live in a family house at Mellon Street in the Wellington community. Haja is the mother of Kadima. They had been yearning for a bed net for a long time. They were very happy to receive bed nets to help them sleep better - and be protected against mosquito bites and malaria. Your support made this possible.

Haja asked us to pass on her gratitude to YOU for the very welcome and timely gift. She said - “I have been worried about my child’s health due to mosquito bites - especially so in this Ebola crisis. That stress has been lifted due to the provision of bed nets. I really want to thank you.” She further said "sleep has been different now for me and my daughter".

Thanks to YOU, many of the under-5 year old children who are most at risk are now able to sleep safe and sound.

However, hundreds of families are still at risk sleeping with no nets or with damaged nets in the Wellington community. We need to provide each family with 2-3 nets. Your continued support will help us provide this life-preserving gift to them today! Thanks so much for your support!
