Introduction and Overview

Yengat Birhan Charity Organization focuses on empowering underserved women in Ethiopia through skill-building, economic independence, and holistic support. Established in 2016, the organization prioritizes marginalized groups such as single mothers and women-led households, addressing challenges in financial stability and health.

Key intervention areas include:

Þ Income Generation: Providing skill-building and startup capital to women.

Þ Health and Hygiene: Promoting preventive health education.

Þ Emergency Assistance: Addressing immediate housing and food needs.

Yengat Birhan Charity Organization is dedicated to empowering women by fostering financial independence and resilience. The organization prioritizes sustainable economic empowerment, social inclusion, and health education, enabling women to build better futures for their families. Through collaborative strategies and targeted interventions, the organization addresses systemic challenges while cultivating community-driven approaches to enhance women's self-reliance and leadership.

Major Achievements

vSkill Development

During the last months, women actively participated in business skill training sessions designed to enhance their entrepreneurial capabilities. These sessions included weekly group discussions where participants openly shared their challenges and ideas. The project team engaged with the women to understand family-specific needs, foster collaborative problem-solving, and encourage them to take ownership of their economic growth.

vStartup Support

Totally, thirty-five women received startup capital to either launch or expand small businesses. Using savings from their self-help groups, participants were able to grow their businesses, improving their family income and living conditions. The organization’s support empowered women to achieve financial independence and make sustainable investments in income-generating activities.

vEmergency Assistance

Vulnerable women-led families were supported with essential housing and food supplies during critical times of economic hardship. The organization also facilitated discussions addressing economic challenges such as inflation and repayment issues for borrowed funds. These sessions provided women with a safe environment to identify practical solutions to manage their financial difficulties effectively.

vHealth Education

Targeted health education sessions were conducted to improve mothers' awareness of preventive care and family well-being. A key focus was placed on hygiene practices and equipping mothers with knowledge to guide their children effectively. These sessions created a positive learning environment, with participants enjoying refreshments such as Habesha bread, water, coffee, and tea while gaining valuable insights to improve their family dynamics.

Project Phasing-Out

Now, some of its SHG groups officially concluded due to the government's Corridor Development Strategy and the sub city’s recommendation to close the activities especially who stayed longer with us. During the phase-out process, women were encouraged to sustain their progress by applying their acquired skills, continuing their savings practices, and utilizing community networks for ongoing support.

Challenges Faced

The organization faced significant challenges due to inflation, which drove up the cost of materials and operational logistics, thereby straining its budget. These financial constraints required prioritizing activities and carefully managing resources to maintain program effectiveness. Despite these hurdles, strengthened partnerships with local stakeholders and strategic planning enabled the organization to continue its impactful interventions, though the need for diversified funding remains critical to sustaining its efforts.

Lessons Learned

Quarterly report

This is project report on raising income for 71 single mom’s living in slum area of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Report period from May –August, 2024

Introduction

Yengat Birhan Charity organization is a local non-governmental and non-profit organization that works on women children education, Women Economics empowerment and Health since 2016,

Here under is some of our update, in which activities performed on this reporting period.

The organization was working in assisting 71 very disadvantages women to engage in an income generating activities. One of the main support areas in our project are supporting women to engaged in income generating activities and to create awareness on some important social issues, to help them to overcome the struggling life and to support them sending their children to school in a sustainable way.

The IGA women’s get together every week and some groups in every other fifteen days, to discuss their progress, saving, and loan repayment and other social issues too.

In order to make the work of the women effective and improve, we made an assessment for three different days in order to find out the situation of each of the women who engaged in IGA, and to identify the women who need training to bring about change according to their abilities, for whom need employed and also for whom need additional financial supports. Based on the assessment we made one mom went to vocational training, almost on final Stape for graduation.

The following activities were accomplished in this quarter in the women project

We were keeping to follow the moms in their Self-help group /SHG approach as a women empowerment model. The following activities are the performance of 71 women with in five groups. One group contains in average 15 to 20 members. In all their discussion, Yengat Birhan community facilitator is there to help them in their challenges.

We could perform the following activity for this quarter under this project:

We Keep the discussion of women IGA groups on their varies problems and issue on weekly basses in the one hour meeting in their villages
Saved money from Birr 5 to 10 on weekly basis in order to engage in income generating activities, so as to improve the family life.
Women starting small business and others improving their business by using their group money, capital.
Learning and discussing of the family need and related intervention is continuing, In the discussion, the project team is learned specific family need and further discuss the type of future intervention, how it will be implemented and expected role and responsibilities.
The five groups saved money regularly and that helps to use for improving income generating activities, the women are using the savings to start\upgrade their business and changing their family life.
The family of the students were given health education on the topic hypertension and diabetics and they had Habeshas bread with tea/coffee as refreshment.
We provided training for about 18 moms on life skill and business, we also provided money for them from birr six thousand to fifteen thousand according with their business plan in order to sustain their income generating activities. On the other hand, we could provide vocational training for one mom as her interest, they were happy because the training and the money helped them to generate income for this challenging time. The economic inflation makes most of mom’s business affected, including their daily life.
As our main interventions focused area, income generating activities, though YBCO is working to make a visible difference by way of introducing a sustainable community owned projects through building self-esteem and strong partnership to its stakeholders, lack of working places for the women’s business is making it difficult for them to improve their income specially now is more difficult for them.
Due to the ongoing national city development activities, some of our mom’s business disturbed and the living conditions is affected. There are many more mothers who are struggling to raise their children and sending to school in the slum areas of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Report period from January –April, 2024

Introduction

Dear as you know, Yengat Birhan Charity organization is a local non-governmental and non-profit organization that works on women Economics empowerment and health since 2016,

Here under is some of our performed activities on this reporting period.

As we reported before, the organization was working in assisting 71 very poor women to engage in an income generating activities. The main support areas in the project are supporting women to engaged in income generating activities and to create awareness on some important social issues, to help them to overcome the struggling life and to support them sending their children to school in a sustainable way.

The IGA women’s get together every week and the other every fifteen days, to discuss their progress, saving, and loan repayment. IGA Women's Passbook has printed; the passbook was prepared by sharing the cost both YBCO and the women. The group contributed 25% in birr 30 each women and the organization 75% in generally covered 1425 birr to printed passbook.

In order to make the work of the women effective and improve, an assessment was made for three different days to find out the situation of each of the women, and to identify the women who need training to bring about change according to their abilities, for whom need employed and also for whom need additional financial supports. We are working to do what is needed based on the assessment we did.

The following activities were accomplished in this quarter in the women project

Keep discussed on their varies problems and issue on weekly basses for one hour in their villages
Saved money from Birr 5 to 10 on weekly basis in order to engage in income generating activities, so as to improve the family life.

Learning and discussing of the family need and related intervention is continuing, In the discussion, the project team is learned specific family need and further discuss the type of future intervention, how it will be implemented and expected role and responsibilities.

Moms of the students’ parents were given health education regarding the contents what, the time when, and the way how to use the social media and technologies to control their children. They had Habeshas bread with half litter of water as refreshment.
Moms of the students’ parents were discussed on why they couldn’t pay back the money they borrowed, the economic inflation which affected their daily life and their business and also why they couldn’t came the discussion time of the team. They had Habeshas bread with coffee and tea for refreshment. They discussed freely about a lots of things and reasons finally they were appreciated the organization for the prepared discussion time to get the solution.
As our main interventions focused area, income generating activities, though YBCO is working to make a visible difference by way of introducing a sustainable community owned projects through building self-esteem and strong partnership to its stakeholders, lack of working places for the women’s business is making it difficult for them to improve their income specially now is more difficult for them.
Due to the ongoing national development, something is happening that disturbs their working and living conditions that is the place where our women are located is where people are raised for development which has made their situation and their roots difficult. Some are up and away, while others are waiting. It will be a challenge for them to find a suitable environment and for conditioning their work.

There are many more mothers who are struggling to raise their children and sending to school in the slum areas of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
