Dear Donors,
Sending good wishes for the new year! Looking back on 2023, we wanted to share a glimpse of one of our new projects to explore creative ways of rescuing valuable textiles collected via our Takeback programme that your donations help support. .
Through this programme the majority of unwanted clothing we collect from the public gets redistributed to our network of charity partners across Hong Kong and onto their beneficiaries, or resold to support our programme work. However up to 20% is not fit for reuse in its current form for various reasons including quality and condition. So last year we partnered with Redress Alumni designers to explore this waste stream - take a glimpse of the process here: Redress Alumni Collaboration: Exploring Clothing Waste.
Polish designer Pat Guzik made limited edition dresses from a prevalent feedstock of t-shirts and shirts, Eric Wong has transformed denim and flannel shirts into teddy bears, and Lola Clavel is currently exploring luxury fabrics and lace (more information to follow) - all repurposing these unsuitable clothes into something beautiful and diverting them from their normal destiny of being downcycled.
If you are interested in getting your hands on one of these items you can drop by the Redress Closet in Sham Shui Po or get in touch via email (john@redress.com.hk). Eric’s bears make the perfect Valentine's Day gift - both cute and sustainable!
At Redress, we are more committed than ever to reducing clothing waste. We believe that every step counts towards creating a cleaner and greener planet. Together with your continued support, we can continue to make a difference in 2024 in reducing the impact of clothing waste on the environment. If you are in Hong Kong, find out about our upcoming Get Redressed Month in May here.
Please consider donating to our project here to support more of our work towards waste reduction.
Warm Regards,
John Francia
