Rehabilitate 250 disabled children in India

I am uploading this report again as the same has gone to a retired project of ours. Please accept this as the correct report for the quarter.

I am very thankful to present our fifth report of the project - Rehabilitate 250 disabled children in India via GlobalGiving.

This time I would like to call your attention to some of our activities than what we do for the disabled children. Sangli Mission Society run Help Kerala Campaign from 19^th to 25^th Aug 2018 to help the flood affected people in Kerala. Campaign was organized using social media to reach out to people. Apart from people from all walks of life; schools, colleges, universities, clubs, Self Help Groups, NGOs and our staff donated vehemently to this cause. A truck full of collected material was sent on 26^th Aug 2016 to Kerala. We have acknowledged the donors with letter of appreciation.

Tree plantation campaign carried out with the help of Self Help Groups, schools and Govt. officials in various villages. 472 trees were planted in July & Aug 2018. Responsibility of tree preservation was taken by Self Help Groups and schools in respective areas. 147 people from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families linked with micro insurance policy. This is a unique attempt helping the poor people to benefit insurance in case of death or returns the deposited amount to the policy holder once the term gets over.  

Fourtailoring batches in Kanwad, Khed, Halondi, Kerlivillages were inaugurated in Sept. 2018. 123 women from Ghalwad village of Shirol Maharashtra were provided with certificate as they have successfully completed tailoring course and bag making training. Conducted free physiotherapy medical camp for physically disabled special children under CBR project in September 2018 at ALPHO training and animating center, Herle, Kolhapur. We also conducted two days’ training program titled “Learning through Comics”, on 5^th & 6^th Oct. 2018 at ALPHO training and animation center, Herle, Kolhapur. The aim of the workshop was to train the CWDs with comics to independently express their feelings and issues through the use of comics.

Let me share with you few success stories…

Raju (name changed) was born on 06^th November 2010 with intellectual disability, hearing and speech impairment. This boy is also small in physique and was admitted to Jeevdan Special School on 25^th June 2018. His eye-hand co-ordination and fine motor functioning was poor that he was not able to hold objects properly. After five months of physiotherapy there is extraordinary progress in his gross and fine motor skills that he is able eat and drink with own hands. He studies in pre-primary group. He has made remarkable progress in managing toilet needs. Because of speech therapy he has improved his communication skills and tries to express his needs in simple words. He tries to follow indications. He listens to music and participates in group games/activities.

Abu (name changed) a 11 year old boy, was admitted to Jeevdan Special School on 20^th December 2016. He was born on 07^th February, 2007. He was diagnosed with moderate intellectual disability with Down syndrome. Child tries to manage personal care. He studies in primary session. He needs verbal prompting for washing, brushing, undressing, dressing etc. He writes a few numbers one and two. Child is able to concentrate for a longer period and listens to the teachers. He is very much active in the class. He recognizes pictures of animals, birds, fruits, vegetables, vehicles etc. He is interested in yoga, sports and games and participates in running, spot jump etc. Parents are overwhelmed by the progress of the child. He plays tabala well and is interested in music.

We have four recurring donors at present. I would like to tell you that “Year-End Campaign” begins from 27^th November 2018 and ends on 31^st December. As you know this is a month long campaign. We have received $1748 in the last quarter through the excellent support of kind hearted people.

We have begun a new academic year on 15^th June 2018 after one and a half months of summer holidays with lots of preparations, enthusiasm and hope. We are aware that we are dealing with intellectually & physically disabled children who are in need of our attention and care. On 20^th June 2018 we opened a vocational training centre to train the disabled children in various skills in Anugraha campus, Khed, Ratnagiri. There are 237 students getting trained in four schools.

Special education is designed in a way that all the activities in the campus are part of the learning process, curriculum aims at independence in self-help skills, academic skill development, economic rehabilitation and mainstreaming. Class teachers plan out Individual Education Program (I.E.P.) for every child in which child’s current level is assessed and short term and long term goals are determined. Language alphabets, numbers, colors, good habits, basic concepts, good manners, reading and writing and general knowledge are taught. Special services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy etc. are given to the needy.

Some of the co-curricular activities conducted in this quarter…

On July 2^nd Jeevdan students were introduced to paddy cultivation that they understand significance of agriculture and eco-friendly life style. On June 17^th students presented cultural programs on the occasion of 18^th anniversary of Jeevdan special school. On 21^st June International Yoga Day was celebrated. On August 15^th all the schools invariably celebrated Independence Day. Festival of Raksha Bandhan too was celebrated in the school. Large number of nursing students, college students and others visited the school and celebrated with students.

Ashwini (name changed) is a seven year old little girl with intellectual frailty and cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs amounting to 50 % disability. This girl child was admitted to Jeevdan Special School in 2017. Child was not able to get up, stand or move a step ahead without help at the time of admission. Her eye-hand co-ordination and fine motor functioning was very poor that she was not able to hold anything. After one year and two months of physiotherapy there is extraordinary progress in her gross and fine motor skills that she is able to get up, stand and walk independently and eat and drink with own hands. She studies in primary group. She has made remarkable advance in indicating her toilet needs and extended her duration of urine holding capacity from five minutes to one hour. Because of speech therapy she has improved her communication skills and tries to express her needs in simple words. She greets people and mixes well with peer group.

Ramesh (name changed) a 12 year old boy, was admitted to Jeevdan Special School in 2013. He was diagnosed with severe intellectual disability and autism (disability 80 %). Child did not develop speech and expressed his needs through gestures and sounds. Child found it difficult to mix with peer group and kept aloof or ran away from students and teachers. After four years of continued training, speech therapy and special education he improved very much. He has made significant improvement in self-help skills and is interested in music and dance. Parents are overwhelmed by the progress of the child.
