Annual Report 2016

In 2016, TDTB achieved many goals and helped many visually impaired people in Taiwan. We are grateful for all donors, staff and co-workers. Here is our achievement in 2016:

1.DAISY BOOKS

We recorded and made eleven DAISY digital talking books, all in Chinese. The topics of books are: business management, biography of disabled people, tour of Taipei city, history, children literature.

2.Projects

A. Digital service program for visually impaired people. We served 27 people, provided them 231 hours of computer courses. And, we provided 200 hours of psychological counseling. We also held five seminars for life experience sharing. In DAISY library, we made 813 new books in DAISY format. The number of browsing this online library is 23707 times.

B. Tour of Literature for VIP. We held 8 book clubs and two tour of literature. There are totally 209 people joining in the project.

C. Tour of Ancient Monuments in Taipei for VIP. We held three tours in DATUNG district, and three tours in BEITOU district in Taipei City. Total number of people joining in the tours is 221.

D. Computer courses: individual tutor: 315 hours. Group class: 36 hours.

E. Vocational training. 5 months( from June to November), trained 11 disabled people vocational skills. Three of them found a job.

F. Internet accessibility. we held 8 seminars in colleges. And we held the speech contest, 400 people joined this ceremony for final.

G. Cathay bank foundation sponsored a project including travel, computer courses and books clubs. There were 96 hours of courses, 4 tours (76 people participating), 4 book clubs (64 people)

3. Volunteer training

A. 10 Fubon bank volunteers, made 32 DAISY books.

B. 12 Yahoo! volunteers, made 40 DAISY books.

iPhone Tutoring

With your support, we have held many computer courses as we can. From Oct. to Dec. 2016, we have focused on two kinds of classes:

1. The iPhone tutoring class:

We hired visually impaired teachers to teach visually impaired people (VIP) how to use iPhone. With VoiceOver (screen reader) and SIRI, iPhone is the best accessible smart phone for VIP. Therefore, we provide FREE iPhone tutoring classes for VIP. If VIP learned how to use iPhone, they can browse the internet, watch YOUTUBE videos, shopping online, use APP to check bus or taxi…., and so on. They can really satisfy their needs and enjoy the fun of convenience with smart phones.

2. Computer group classes:

We focus on NVDA (screen reader) and WORD classes. If VIP want to use PC, they have to learn screen reader called NVDA. It’s a free and powerful screen reader for VIP, and it can almost read every word on the pc system or webpages. And, if VIP learn to use WORD, they can read articles, improve their skills and have more possibilities to find a job.

Miss Yao’s feedback: ”This is my first time to learn NVDA, I am surprised that VIP can use internet to shopping!! I feel extremely happy! The other benefit for this class is that I make many friends. My volunteer is a good man, and we became good friends after the class. Thank you for your help!”

3. One day trip for VIP

With your support, we provide one day trip for VIP. Visually impaired people hardly go for a trip because of their vision disability. We provide trained volunteers to help every person to travel safe and sound. We went to DA-SHI historical street to shopping and eating. We also went to a sweets factory to DIY Japanese Sweets.

Mr. Cheng’s Feedback: “ I feel this trip is fun. Thanks for my volunteer buying me a bell. The lunch is very great, too. I also touch many statues. I wish I can have another trip in the future!”

Maintain and Enlarge the Taiwan DAISY Library continually.

This Online DAISY library is constructed in 2010, and all the visually impaired people are welcome to be our members from then. At present, our TDTB library has over 500 members and provides over 5718 DAISY books.

Finally, we offer psychology counseling services. Firstly, our social workers talk over the visually impaired face to face and learn to know their real needs. Secondly, we will find licensed counselors to arrange therapy. After the therapy, we expect them to recover their mental health gradually.(Dec. 2016)

Taipei Historical Sites Trip for VIP- DaTong Dist.

Background Information

Just like what most people say history is a priceless treasure to one’s country. Taipei city has established 130 years of long history. It is known for its eminent ancient relics. People that live in Taipei are free to enjoy the lovely historical sites that were kept for them. However, for visually impaired people this was not something easy. Usually, visually impaired people don’t have a lot of chances to travel around. Not to mention how difficult it is for them to visit ancient monuments. With the support of the Government and donors, we hope to obtain opportunities for our visually impaired friends to contact with the amazing historic architectures in Taipei. Therefore, beginning from 2014 to 2016, the Taiwan Digital Talking Book Association (TDTB) has successfully carried out three accessible trips. Not only would this soothe up both the body and mind, but also enrich visually impaired people’s life. The trips include, going by order, the WanHua district, visiting the Qingshan Temple, Longshan Temple, Tianhou Temple, and the Ximen Red House. Then, moving on to the ZhongZheng district, visiting the Presidential Office Building, Taipei Guest House, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei Zhongshan Hall, Taipei Post Office, and National Taiwan Museum. Finally, the ZhongShan district, visiting the Taipei Brewery, Former American Consulate, Zhongshan Presbyterian Church, and Taipei Story House.

Summary—Plan Out

Due to the great success towards the three previous trips, TDTB has planned out a fourth trip. Starting on April 2016 and till the end of June 2016, we have already arranged three trips to visit beautiful historic sites in the DaTong district. This would eventually let our visually impaired friends understand better about the value within the historical sites and the beauty of art. The most unique part of this activity is that it synthesizes adept knowledge towards historical culture, the adoption of voice guidance, and creating fascinating interaction. Therefore, we made preparations beforehand. To begin, we recorded DAISY digital books focusing on Taipei’s historical monuments, culture, and sites, which we would hand out to all of the members going on the trips. This would in depth their knowledge towards this topic. For the voice guidance, we invited prominent tour guides to join our trip. Then, with the help of our volunteers, we guide visually impaired people touch and feel the ancient architectures. This would generate an interaction within people and historical constructions. We hope to create a memorable impression for our visually impaired friends.

Our Goals

-Improve the chance for visually impaired people to contact with the historical architectures

-Understand the value within the historical sites and the beauty of art

-Leaving their houses and to travel around

-Soothe up both body and mind, increasing health

-Enrich visually impaired people’s life and spirit

-Creating a memorable impression

Extra information

-The trip goes from 13:30~16:30

-Open to maximum 20 visually impaired members

-Assisting with 20 volunteers, tour guide, and 2 employees

-Everyone on the trip is required to have travel safety insurance

-Collecting a reflection written by the everyone that attended the trip
