Literature seminars

This year, TDTB provides a new service: free literature seminars.  From July to September, TDTB hold eight literature seminars for visually impaired people.  The speakers are professors from department of Chinese literature in different colleges.  So they are professional enough to deliver the speech.  The topics are interesting, too.  Topics are about how to write a novel, how to write a poem, how to write an essay, how to appreciate different literature, how to make rhymes and rhetoric.  These speech topics are rare to visually impaired people.  Therefore, they love to attend literature seminars.  There were 160 people totally attending these eight seminars.  TDTB wished that we can hold more literature seminars in the future.

Recording and Production of Digital Talking Books

From September to November, we finished recording four books in DAISY format.  The topics of four books are about Taiwanese Literature.  These four books are made in DAISY format and will be given to visually impaired people for free.  Besides there is a section on TDTB’s website called “DAISY Library”.  Every month, we produce about 80~90 e-books in DAISY format and put them on the website.  This DAISY Library has over 360 members and over 3500 DAISY books till now (2014 November.)  All DAISY books (audio or text only) are free to visually impaired people.  With your financial support, we can continually record digital audio books and produce e-books in DAISY format.

What is digital DAISY format?  DAISY format is an international format for making digital talking books.  According to the DAISY consortium, DAISY format is the best way to read and the best way to publish for the visually impaired.

TDTB made DAISY books and web broadcasting programs especially for visually impaired people, and we will teach them how to read these books with free classes.  The website of web radio programs is: http://www.tdtb.org/information_2.aspx. The broadcasting programs are about useful topics of English learning, Health, Travelling, Book reviews and Interviews.  In the future, we will continue recruiting volunteers to record daisy digital talking books and touching articles.  The section of good article is called “Garden of Heart” on our website.  We hope that there will be more radio programs if TDTB can raise more funds.

Computer Training Courses

With your support, we have held as free computer courses for the visually impaired.  TDTB provides different classes according to their needs.  For those who need computer training, TDTB provides NVDA classes (about how to use screen reader “NVDA”). For those students, we provide the writing classes to learn how to write an article.  And for teachers and parents, we teach them how to aid visually impaired students.  The content of class includes basic computer information/operation, keyboard lessons, iPhone and Android (most popular topic!), sound editing software (such as Goldwave, My studio PC), Microsoft Office (WORD, PowerPoint) and Youtube (search and download), blogs and surfing the internet.  The most important of all, our computer teachers are visually impaired people.  They learned from our vocational training course; and when they finished this course, they are capable of teaching other visually impaired people.  In 2013, there were 105 people use the project to learn more than 2000 hours of free computer classes.  We also planned new classes in the future such as literature classes.  With your help, we can hold more and more new classes.
