Rwanda is vulnerable to a wide range of natural hazards including floods, landslides, earthquake and rainstorms. Following the floods caused by the heavy rain on 2 and May 2023 in Northern Western, and Southern provinces, where this disaster left thousands of families without shelter, food, and other basic life. 130 deaths in this week more than 5,000 homes were destroyed (figures as of 4th May 2023). The project will provide basic needs and will also provide home-to-home counseling therapy.
Every year, Rwanda is facing flooding, the available data for 2018 and 2019, 388 deaths were registered, 21601 houses were damaged, and 23947.66 Ha of Crops were damaged. Recently this week data of 4th May 2023, floods had completely destroyed over 5,100 houses and affected an additional 2,500, more than 130 people were died and left with several injuries. These disasters were caused by floods and erosion, which resulted in houses collapsing on people. We aim to provide emergency support.
The project will provide emergency disaster relief, the package including food to families facing this disaster. Home Supplies (bed covers etc.), and hygiene materials, our volunteers will also provide home-to-home counseling therapy and training on disaster management, prevention, and control of flood. As part of this project, we will plant trees and vegetation to retain extra water which can't be carried out within stream channels to reduce and prevent the flow of water from flooding
The project will improve the life of flood survivors in Rwanda, Northern Province western province, and southern province. Training on disaster management, flood control, and prevention strategies will reduce flood consequences in the area. The established man-made channels/ anti-erosive terraces and planted trees or vegetables will continue to retain water that can't be carried out within streams and natural rivers and lakes.
