Restoring Healthcare to Women and Girls in Liberia

According to the UNICEF report on "Child, Maternal and newborn Health", Liberia has one of the world’s highest rates of maternal mortality. One out of every ten women dies while pregnant, giving birth to their babies or in the aftermath of delivery. When a mother dies, the likelihood of her baby dying increases. We are thrilled that the construction of the Maternity & Surgical addition to our Waterfield Primary Healthcare Center has been fully funded and will begin in the first quarter of 2022. We will greatly appreciate your donations so that we will be able to furnish this new building with the necessary medical equipment to make it operational.

In other news, a low mileage used 15 passenger van has been purchased for our Community Health Workers to help them reach 37 villages around our home base in Kakata, Margibi County, Liberia. Our old van was pretty much beyond repair after years of off-road service in Liberia. Our Community Health Workers provide medical and hygene training, provide prenatal and worm medications, take blood pressures and provide referrals when necessary.

As we start our 11th year, we're excited about these opportunities to increase healthcare services to women, children and families in Margibi County. We're so greatful for your support which helps us save lives in Liberia.

Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia reached an agreement with  L V Prasad Eye Institute Liberia to set up and operate an Eye Care Center within HWHL’s Waterfield Primary Healthcare Center.  The Eye Care Center is now operational providing services at affordable costs to all segments of the community who can afford to pay for the services as well as providing free eye care to all those who are in need and cannot afford to pay for the services.  In addition to eye tests, glasses are fitted and, glaucoma and other conditions are treated at Waterfield.  Our Opthomoligist, Dr. Douglas is at the Eye Care Center seeing patients 5 days a week.  We also have an Ophthalmologist, Dr. Joseph Kerkula, who continues to see patients twice a month. Surgeries (such as for cataracts) are referred to LVPEI’s facility at JFK hospital in Monrovia.  We’re thrilled to be able to offer this life-changing service to the people of Margibi County Liberia.
