Dear valued supporters,
When Somanea (not her real name) arrived at Mother's Heart, the trauma from her abusive relationships deeply affected her mental health, leaving her struggling with severe emotional distress and unpredictable outbursts. She was abandoned, pregnant with nowhere to turn to, except her ailing mother.
Our team assessed her situation and addressed her immediate needs: maternal healthcare, mental health support, and a safe place for her and her unborn child. A diagnosis led to a course of medication and regular hospital check ups.
Somanea's road to recovery was far from easy. She struggled with the side effects of medication and the overwhelming responsibility of caring for a newborn. Our team - a social worker and a midwife - faced unique challenges in providing support. Navigating the complexities of mental health intertwined with pregnancy and motherhood required patience, understanding, and a strong commitment to Somanea and her mother, who became her and her baby's primary caregiver.
Despite these challenges, Somanea and her mother persevered. Through consistent care and support from our team and community partners, she began to manage her symptoms. And with her mother's strong resolve, she gradually regained a sense of agency. She slowly became stable, engaged each day, taking small steps in caring for herself and her baby, and even started helping her mother around the house.
Thanks to your compassion and generosity, Somanea is on her way to healing and stability. Her story highlights the complex issues women face when they come to us and the importance of compassionate support can have on their lives.
Somanea is one the 156 women and girls currently in our program, with 42 joining us in 2024. Out of this number, 57 mothers (36%) are below 18 years old. We also care for 151 children, including 45 healthy babies (with twins) born last year.
Your donations help us to continue providing critical care and support that women like Somanea need overcome adversity. We thank you for standing alongside us. It has been an incredible but challenging year. We couldn't do it without you! As we look ahead to 2025, we hope you will continue to support our mission and help more women and girls on their journey to a brighter future.
With gratitude,
Team Mother's Heart
